Kindle

I am thinking of getting a kindle for my 10 year old daughter and just wondered how many free books are available for that age range. Also how much are books, are they the same price as normal books or are they less as they are not in print?

Just go on Amazon and look at kindle books - can search by age range etc or fav author - the price is there the same as paper backs

There's not a lot of free books really, unless you want to download the older classics. You can get some from 99p, others are nearer paperback price.

Actually generally kindle books are cheaper than print books. You can have a look at Amazon now and see what kids books are free , some are self published but kindle books don't cost as much as print books. With some e readers you can borrow books from your local library... kobo maybe? Either way its a good idea to get a backlit one such as the paperwhite. I wouldnt be without my kindle.

Just a point - but you can get a cheaper tablet and download the kindle app - it's just the same

The kindle app isn't the same as a kindle though. A kindle is far easier on your eyes than a tablet app.

I'd definitely go for a Kindle. Books do tend to be cheaper for kindles. Prices go up and down a lot. I have more expensive ones on my wish list which I check pretty much daily and buy them when they drop.

I find for some of the more popular books such as Jacqueline Wilson and David Walliam the kindle books are a lot more expensive, except for occasional offers. Also mine prefer printed books.

Kindles are different. I find if im reading on my phone my eyes are strained also i get distracted because of all the other apps. If im on my kindle all i can do is read and i can get immersed far more easily. E readers are specially designed to be as much like reading a page as possible and its pretty damn close!

redglitter this is exactly what I do. I put everything I want in my wishlist and check regularly. I've never bought a full priced kindle book.
My kindle is the one thing I'd replace instantly if it broke!

DH buys me Amazon vouchers as part of Xmas / anniversary / birthday presents and I use them to stock up with books I want.

The kindle fire is down to £59.99 on Amazon deal at the moment.

We will give DD, 9, a kindle but I doubt it will replace reading printed books. We tried the app - DD hates it, the screen is too different, she gives up. We tried the library e-book catalogue as we thought about getting her a Kobe but the stock is tiny, hardly anything for her age group. Also we can only get books for 1 week, it sometimes is enough but not always.

We see the kindle as an addition to normal books, good for going away, being able to fit a kindle in the handbag instead of carrying a paperback with us. DD knows I have my kindle with me all the time and steals it when she is bored waiting somewhere.

I normally buy books discounted or second hand so I hope getting her into the habit of a kindle with free books instead of paying over the odds. I never buy a kindle book if the printed version is cheaper.

We do still buy printed books. Kindles are very good but sometimes you have to curl up on the couch with a real book.
