Ideas to make Christmas Day fun for adults

Having a bit of a different Christmas this year and going to my inlaws. DH is an only child so it's just the 4 of us.

They love sitting round a table for hours and criticising our life choices, so I'm after fun ideas to distract them. Have bought Cards Against Humanity, but have no idea what else to plan.

Ideas massively welcome!

Some board games sound like a good idea, and also, what about asking about family history? I love when we go to my in-laws and his grandparents head up the table and tell us stories about when they were newly weds or when my husband's mum and aunt were small.

It makes me realise how important it is to know all these things and these stories, people won't always be around to ask!

They also get YouTube music quizzes up which can be quite fun.

Are you sure that's the right audience for Cards against humanity?

I'd get exploding kittens, myself.

Could you do an activity like building a gingerbread house? Definitely get out of the house for a walk.

I'd suggest a different game too
I could never play cards against humanity with my in laws.
They are definitely old fashioned in the way they think even though they are not what I consider elderly.
I'd play it with my Mother and Stepdad though as both are very open minded with a wicked sense of humour.
It depends on how easily offended people are

The problem with a walk is that they still criticise us.

What about pictionary? Or we played name that tune last Xmas- M&S did a little set with cards and music suggestions then you got split into teams and had to hum it- it was a great laugh!

DD got a game called something like "Don't break the egg". It's a ticking egg thing that has a variable timer inbuilt (so you have no idea how long it will tick for) before the egg cracks, or bomb explodes or whatever it is that it does. There are loads of general knowledge questions with it, and if you get one right, you pass the egg along to the next person, otherwise you keep it and get another question. Whoever "breaks the egg" (has it when it stops ticking) has to take all the cards that were answered in that round. Whoever has the most cards once all the cards have been asked, is the loser. Great fun.

QBitz is a fun one that we play - each player gets an identical set of 16 cubes in a tray and you all try to make the picture on the card you turn over. Here, the highest number of cards (for successful completion) is the winner.

Playing cards for whist, rummy, snap, 21, etc.....

Have you got nice music to put on?

Would they watch a movie together with you - whether new or classic, Christmas/festive or just a good movie nothing to do with the season?

I'd also bring a new book to settle down and enjoy - maybe even have a book each in their presents?

No other ideas, but my MIL playing CAH last Xmas was the highlight of my year. Utter filth and completely unexpected

We play dominos. We also generally make the meal last many hours and just eat at a relaxed pace and chat between courses. Lots of fizz helps things along too

One idea I have that I might do this year and will be a talking point if you have any wine snobs is get 3 bottles of fizz of varying price ranges and types, and cover the labels and see if people can tell cheap from expensive and which they like best with a prize for the winner.

So you could have something cheap, but well rated that snobby McSnob face would automatically turn their noses up if they knew what it was, like Aldi cava, a champagne of whatever value you can afford/bear to pay for and something else, eg a prosecco, or something unusual like an English sparkler, depends on your budget really, you could have a mid range 'posh' prosecco from Waitrose or M&S instead.

Christmas music to drown out their criticisms of you jolly things along?

The Rizla Game! (Or you can use post its )

You write the name of a famous person in the rizla and stick it in your neighbours head. You take it in turns to ask Yes/No questions until you work it out!

It helps if you have either a vodka jelly or a vodka watermelon

Can't you just get pissed and watch TV like everyone else?

Have you seen that Speak Out game? You put a mouth widener thingy in your mouth and say phrases to eachother. The others have to guess.

I can imagine with a few snifters in you that would be quite funny.

Why on earth are you spending Christmas with them? You're going there just to be criticised - why?

Dont go, spend the day at home in your pjs and relax. I wouldnt go somewhere to be picked at all day

Have you played cards against humanity?

We played last Christmas with my older teens. I cant envisage playing it with my parents. Nor can I see it being an alternative activity to a gingerbread house.

We have exploding kittens and the adult expansion pack for this year.
