Scalextric?

Hi all,

Starting to get organized for Christmas and working out presents etc. before everything gets too busy! I wish I could say it was my DS that wanted a Scalextric set, but sadly it's DH. That being said, I'd like to look into getting him one as he's been desperate for years, but I have no idea where to start. Can anyone advise?

I don't really want to spend more than about £70 on the whole lot. I've found this set online which looks fairly reasonable price-wise but doesn't have the best reviews.

If anyone has actual knowledge about these things and could let me know whether this is a good deal or whether there's something else I should be looking for, I'd really appreciate it!

Sorry to be a kill joy but we bought one for ds, it's rubbish! About 5 friends have done same and all went back to the shop. Others might be along with more positive reviews but I wouldn't recommend them at all!

We bought one on a nostalgia trip, but it does just sit in a box. If you are East of England pm me and you can have it for £50!

I am one of those DH's who has a Scalextric set. I will be open and honest.

I wouldn't buy the set in the link. Once the nostalgia had ended, that set would be quite boring. Plus the car on the inside of the track would always win. Plus all the cars do is go round and round, there are no crossing points where the cars might crash, or obstacles to vary the race.

Unfortunately you need to spend £££ to get a digital set. These allow more than two players and ability to change lanes. However this gives you an element of competition, makes the racing exciting, and after ten years I still play with mine.

I would get a cheap digital set (which is still ££) and then get expansion packs when budgets allow.

Your DH will love you forever, and he will be the most popular bloke in the pub.

Anki overdrive gets good reviews

Dp has bought 3 over the years. None have worked for any length of time. I would think of something else

Hi, I agree with fatnorville - digital is the way to go - with cross overs, bendy bits etc. DH and 2 x DS love there complex set which has been built up over the years.

Thanks, all - that's really helpful and has given me lots to think about. I'll definitely look into a digital version! I wondered if it was one of those things where the cheap version won't cut it, so good (although not for the bank balance) to know that is actually the case.
