Oh my god, I completely forgot about my cakes and haven't decorated them yet. But I have no Apricot jam, can I use something else instead ie. raspberry jam?????

I stuck mine on with nothing. I see no reason why you can used raspberry other than it may discolour slightly.

If it sticks on its own, what is the point of apricot jam???

I've used marmalade before (without the bits)

Oh Nooooooooooo, all I've got is raspberry, will I have to go and get some Apricot???? Will it taste dodgy otherwise?

Raspberry would taste odd with fruit cake, better to use nothing imo.

Don't worry, it'll be fine. You can even brush a bit of brandy/rum/spirit of choice over the cake instead- basically you just have to dampen it a bit to make the stuff stick.

I was told this by my aunt btw, who used to be a professional cake decorator.

Thanks everyone, I have done it now, I used a minute amount of golden syrup, hopeflly, not enough to taste. Oh well, I'll be able to see if it's gross by everybody's faces on xmas day.
