Would you do MIL a stocking?

Normally wake up and it's just us xmas day morning. We have a stocking which gets opened before we go downstairs. This year MIL will be staying. DH is adamant we don't need to do a stocking for her as we've spent enough and she'll be happy with the company. I don't feel comfortable with everyone else having a stocking and not her. Also, she will only have our presents as she opens presents with rest of family when she sees them. I think she'll just be sat there watching us open things.

No. However, in our family only children get stockings. Is she likely to make a fuss?

I would do one - doesn't need to be much, nice chocs, hand cream etc.

If every other adult has one, I think it'd be a nice idea to do one for her too.

On the other hand, is. DH adamant because he thinks she wouldn't enjoy it?

I'd do her one. Tangerine in the toe, a few wrapped chocolates (i use the Lindt ones you can get a small bag or better value bigger ones and eat the rest a packet of post its, or a pretty but tiny notebook and a small tube of handcreme. That would be my default, you can easily adjust to taste, liquor chocolates, small bottle champagne. I think its a lovely idea.

We haven't done them for ages, but i have revived it this year. DH's present comes in a tiny box and i know he loves to have lots to unwrap at christmas. I will put the box in the toe of the stocking and pad the rest out with a chocolate orange, postits in shape of corpse with red pen sticking upright (left over from halloween but who cares, he loves leave notes) emergency button stress reliever and a roll of loo roll with 'interesting facts'.

I would, if all the other adults present have one. I would be very uncomfortable as you say, opening them in front of her if she didn't have one. I imagine she would really appreciate the thought too- as shoeJunkie says it wouldn't need to be expensive. Little bits from pound shop- face mask, small pack of chocs, nail file etc.

I would as well , I'd your relationship with her is good and everyone else has one .... as pps said you can do it quite cheaply and I'm sure it will mean a lot

My mum may be staying with us this Christmas Eve as my dad died this year and she will be on her own. dc always have stockings and last year dh and I did too (the kids filled them). They're doing the same this year so I'm doing one for my mum too. So far it has a few things from Asda & Tesco - Turkish Delight, hand warmer, socks, a scraper glove for her car etc. Just a few more things for her to open. (my dad used to make a huge deal out of Christmas so want her to have a few silly extras to open)

We do stockings for my mam and dad, brother and aunt. They absolutely love them. For my mam I put little things like a glasses repair kit, foot file, nail file, chocolates, car air freshener etc. I also went into a few of the beauty counters and got free samples of their products...great fillers.
My aunt's one also gets the new fireman's charity calendar lol.

I do one for my DM and if my DMIL was staying I would deffinatley do her one too. I know she might think it's daft but she might love it and it will make her feel completely part of the day.

My MiL stays every Christmas eve - I always do her a stocking.

This year she has (all from Poundland or Tiger)

a slim diary
pretty pen
chocolate coins
a tiny perfume bottle
a little colouring book of mandalas
a small pack of brush felt tips
a toothbrush
toothpaste
pretty soap
christmas flannel
a whoopie cushion Grin

she'll also have a tangerine & some walnuts

We have never asked her to, but she does stockings for dh & I which we both really appreciate. She does so much for us during the year, I like to treat her & make her feel very loved at Christmas.

I would definitely do one for her in your situation. Some nice chocs, maybe a pair of Christmas socks, a tangerine (or choc orange) maybe one of the half bottles of cava? Some little bubble baths or nice soaps?

I would. You could do one for less than £10

  • some chocolate
  • some bath stuff
  • magazine
  • nice tea

If the adults have them too then I would definitely do one for MIL in your situation. It will make her happy and therefore contribute to a lovely Christmassy atmosphere on the day Smile

Yes if you do them for adults I think you'll need to include her. The half bottle of cava is genius. Or, if you can only find an intimidatingly large stocking to fill, a full size bottle of something.

Also if you have children the right age and they are used to you having stockings, they will ask awkward questions about why MIL doesn't.

Depends what type of stocking you and DH do for each other, are they small luxuries or just silly little things?

I would not enjoy getting a stocking full of stuff from poundland, just to make me feel included.

If you can't afford a few 'nice' things (I think the chocs, magazine and handcream are good ideas) say spending 15-20 pounds then I wouldn't bother.

But then I don't really get the 'stockings for adults' thing.

Yes, everyone who stays in my house overnight on Christmas Eve gets a stocking in Christmas morning.

The most I've had to do was:

Us (me, dh, 3 docs)
My (adult) stepchildren, plus partners (4 more adults)
My uncle (always stays with us for Christmas)
PIL.

There is no way I wouldn't do one - stockings are the best bit!

Yes, I would. Everyone who wakes up in my house at Christmas gets one.

You may well find that exactly the things you put in a 7yo's stocking go down well for a 70yo (books, toys, sweets, smellies, silly jokes, new pants).

I've done it. She was really pleased. Think the last time she'd had a stocking was when she was about 9. We always do a stocking for the adults.

Trying to remember what was in it but it was something like, nice notebook, fancy pen, fluffy socks, various kinds of chocolate including chocolate coins, handcream, book, bath stuff, face mask, hot chocolate...few other bits that escape me now but basically things that are physically small and cost up to £10 and were a bit nicer/fancier than ones she'd buy herself.

We are in the same position this year with MIL joining us for the first time, and we have done one for her. Simple stocking, think it's a nice gesture
