Nightmare re: DS's Santa present

Kids get one main present from Santa plus a stocking and smaller presents from me and DH.

This year DS talked for weeks about a Lego set he wanted. We saw it for a good price (£85) in Tesco Direct and bought it in mid November. Now DS has changed his mind and wants a different and more expensive Lego set. In fact he just watched a You Tube video about the one we got him and said he was glad he was getting something different from Santa.

I can't exchange the set we've bought as the one he wants isn't in stock and we can't get a refund as we're not within the 28 day refund period. I have emailed Tesco Direct to see if they have extended their returns policy for Christmas but am not hopeful.

I just feel shit. He's only 6 and I know he will be disappointed on Christmas morning. We can't afford to buy the second set too and even if we could I wouldn't want to give him both. I have definitely learned my lesson for next year!

Lego is very popular this time of year so could you sell it on ebay or facebook selling page and get your money back on it that way?

If not I suspect he will be very happy anyway. DS1 came to me this week saying he was really excited to be getting a certain gift except I haven't bought it and it's not available so I've explained that it's too close to christmas to change our mind about presents and I know he will love what he is getting.

DS2 is also getting Lego and I bought his in the summer as I knew it would sell out, thankfully he hasn't changed his mind!

Last year 6yr old ds asked Santa for a robot Hoover, what he actually got was something different and a note from Santa to say "I've heard you have been a good boy. Sorry but the reindeers have had a cold and I didn't get time to make a robot Hoover, I hope you enjoy what I've chosen instead". He was happy enough...

Tell him that it's too late for Santa this year and the list is shut. If he wants something different in mid December, it has to be for his birthday.

And trust me an £85 Lego set is going to keep him busy for hours and I bet he'll be thrilled

Also - I left it until the beginning of the month to get the thing DS really, really wanted and it was out of stock everywhere so I had to get it shipped from Germany. So I too have learned my lesson!

Once you give your letter to Santa there is no changing of minds in our house! Otherwise it can change daily even on Christmas Day itself!
Tell him you already told Santa what to bring him.

By this stage in December there is no changes to lists. It's too late. In fact this year I got my dc to start thinking about them in October because there are always changes.

Can you put the same story you've just told us on their Facebook page and see if it twangs their heart strings? You never know!

If it comes to it, do something like Passthecake did - maybe attach a letter to the front of the parcel explaining that Santa found out too late that he had changed his mind, but that Santa was confident he would love the first present he chose?

Tell him now that Santa will already be working in the set he first asked for and that it's too late to change his mind. I bet he will love the original set once it's opened.

Thanks for all your posts!

I've posted it on a local Facebook page and knocked a tenner off the current price on Amazon (where it seems to be cheapest ).

Stupidly, we didn't get the kids to do their Santa lists until last week. Next year I'm making them write their lists on 1st Dec. We've just been poorly organised this year and money is a bit tight too.

I'm sure you're right, he will be happy with the set we've got once he gets over the initial disappointment.

Tesco will generally just do an exchange on gifts like this as long as they stock both items and the set is unopened. You would only get back the current selling price of the set as credit to use against the new one though.

Do you know that you can get the set he actually wants somewhere else before you sell this one? Don't do what I did and be left with no present at all!

Could you save the one you have until his birthday and get him the other one for Christmas. Then really big up the first one between now and his birthday talking about how great it is and wouldn't it be good to have it to go with his Christmas one?

We've had similar from DS1 (4 years).

Asked for a particular Thomas trackmaster set, which we have bought. Now he's keen on a different one. But we told him he asked Santa for the first one, and the elves will probably have already made that one, and they probably will not have time to make a new one.

He has asked for something else for his birthday, which isn't that long after Christmas.

He is already starting to question the existence of Santa (thanks to one of his friends!) so I'm struggling to keep the magic alive!

i always get the kids to leave their lists under the tree on Xmas eve. Santa reads the lists then sees if he has any in his sack. Sometimes he has run out though and that's why they can't get everything they ask for and sometimes get alternatives instead

Where else stocks the one he wants?

There are a few stores that do exchanges without a receipt. If you were feeling very strong, you could try just walking in to a different shop and asking if you can exchange without the receipt and pay the difference..provided they stock exactly the same sets, it might be worth a try.

TKmaxx will do this (although they aren't much use for Lego); John Lewis will give you a gift card (so you can use it to buy the new set);etc

Thanks, that's interesting. We don't have a John Lewis here but it's available in places like Argos, Asda etc.

Remember Argos have their own catalogue number stuck on the side of everything so perhaps try Asda?
