ds is 9 in March but on his list for Santa is lots of Hot Wheels, Cars stuff , Playmobil etc . Don't mind indulging him a bit but feel it is all a bit "young" and would like to get him something which will hold his interest longer. Is this any good, if a bit more pricey than ideal, or perhaps a digital camera ?

wouldnt bother with hot wheels it just breaks
my sons aged 9 and 10 love lego, kinex, magnetix,
henna beads, micro machines

but they also love their ps2, ds lite, cd's, musical items, mobile phones and dvd's

My ds1 who is 8 is def the easiest of my 3 to buy for. He's quite sporty and loves outdoor stuff. He's getting a skateboard. Have you tried the lego website (that's what ds1 got heaps of for his b'day)? There are so many options, from robots to star wars to train sets to Harry Potter or you can just get loads of bricks.

i did the lego website the other day got loads its fab seems really cheap

my ds has asked for money as he doesn't trust us to get him exactly what he wants! I know he is after some more nintendo ds games and one of the big exoforce lego sets. He is quite sure he only wants money even he hasn't got many pressies to open.

i dont like givin money at christmas
they always get money for b/days unless there is something really special they want

dd is getting some general Lego from my mum and ds isn't really into what he's already got (Space, Ferrari, Viking ship, Bionicles etc) . Similarly k'nex and geomag/magnetix. They get played with but not avidly. Not sporty either.

Sorry I sounded very ungrateful for your suggestions and didn't mean to. I'd love to get him a bike but he can't/won't ride one properly and just isn't interested. Can you put stories onto MP3 players ?

I know not a main pressie but The Book People do a set of 4 books on "Searches" - Castle Search, City Search, Dinosaur Search and a Planet Search. I did a book fair at school recently and they went really well for that age group - I think the 4 are 4.99.

Other than that my 8 yr old nephew has just gotten some Batman lego for his birthday and declared it the best ever.

Stormbreaker dvd and/or books (by Anthony Horowitz.)
Young James Bond books by Charlie Higson ('Silverfin' is the first)
Books on cd/tape if he's not that confident at reading
