Hi,
I'm looking to get my dh a coffee machine for Christmas but I don't drink coffee so these are completely new to me. Help me please..

Are any makes better than others?

How easy are they to clean?

Are the pod things really expensive?

I know I need one that's really easy to use and quite small.

Tia

Hello, this thread is a little old and some of the recommendations might be out of date. If you’re looking for up-to-date advice on the best coffee machine money can buy, take a look at our round-up of Mumsnetters’ favourites. MNHQ.

I recommend Melitta brand. The pod things are a pain if you like to drink loads of coffee like I do.
Insulated carafe keeps coffee fresh longer than glass. Paper filters help get rid of some of the bitterness, but mesh filters don't require remembering to buy filters!

I don't have a pod maker, but they aren't too dear, the pods can be expensive. You can get a reusable pod you put any coffee into.

Chocolatekeepsmesane · 22/10/2015 22:04

Ok thank you I will look at Melitta. I have a lot of research to do.

I got DH the Lavazza a modo moo from Lakeland last Christmas and he loves it.

TheSkiingGardener · 22/10/2015 22:09

Nespresso all the way. Choice or about 30 coffees, easy to use and clean, they recycle the pods and I love the coffee.

I've used filter machines, espresso machines, tassimo ones and dolce gusto and Nespresso wins every time.

I've got a Nespresso machine. I love it. It's very compact and easy to clean. I don't have a Nespresso shop near me so I buy the pods on line. There's a minimum order of 50 pods doing it this way, so it works out at about £20 for 50 inc delivery, depending on which coffee I order. This is the machine I have m.johnlewis.com/mt/www.johnlewis.com/nespresso-inissia-coffee-machine-with-aeroccino-by-magimix/p1239130?colour=Black&un_jtt_v_pdp=yes&un_jtt_v_from_product=un_product_3#page_loaded

You can also buy the pods for the Nespresso in Aldi, Lidl etc Their own brand are much cheaper. I have a tassimo.... It's costing me about £30 a month. I'll be getting s Nespresso as soon as I can afford it. Higher outlay but worth it long term.

Chocolatekeepsmesane · 22/10/2015 22:35

Wow ty notenoughbottle that's definitely good to know

I love my Nespresso. It is fab. Good range of coffees, and the decafs are very good too. Lakeland may still have them on sale (I'd recommend buying from them because of their ridiculously good returns policy. I may have returned mine after 5 years and they replaced it with no hassle whatsoever). I think they are the older models on sale, not that it makes any difference.

I also had a Tassimo, it is shite. The drinks are horrible. Gave it to XH, it's that bad.

I researched coffee machines for DH's birthday and bought a Nespresso with aerocinno from John Lewis. It is great. I was told that the coffee for Nespresso machines is better than that of other machines. So far we are very happy with it. My doubt had been the pods, but following a court ruling other companies can make compatible pods, so we have tried other brands as well (eg Taylor's of Harrogate)

LadyCassandra · 23/10/2015 05:49

I have a Delonghi that I got for my 30th birthday (I am now 36!) and its really good. I use it every single day, at least once. I am a coffee snob and wouldn't buy a pod one (we have had a Tassimo and it was terrible and expensive to refill).

The one that looks most like mine is this one

I got the a Nespresso Inissia with a separate milk frother for a bargain price on Amazon and love it. It got great reviews. I buy pods in bulk from Big Cup Little Cup.
