Boxing Day Ham

Just spent a nice morning browsing the M&S food brochure and starting to think about a Christmas menu. Will have 7 adults and 2 DCs for 3 days.

I'm going to order a Boxing Day ham. What do you serve with yours? Lacking in inspiration.

Potatoes dauphinoise and green veg.

Red cabbage, always. And baby potatoes dressed with lemon, oil and mustard - sort of a hot Scandi-style salad.

Ooo! I'm so pleased dauphinoise and red cabbage has been suggested. M&S have those as prepared options. I'm getting my cook on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so keen for a 'shove it in the oven' option on Boxing Day.

I'll do some green beans too. Thank you.

I serve mine with homemade chips, fried eggs and peas With large slabs of white crusty bread

Lots of fresh crusty bread, cheese and nibbles .

I did it with home made chips and fries duck eggs last year. Bloody lovely and antidote to all the stuff the day before.

I do nigellas ham in cherry coke and cook red cabbage in the resulting stock - yummy.

I usually serve it with Dauph potatoes or mash.

We very rarely have chips as we don't have a fryer so it would just be oven chips which aren't good IMO. All your home made chips sound lovely.

I'm doing a help yourself type affair with cheeses, breads, cold meats etc Christmas Eve so keen not to repeat.

yellowtulips I thought about slow cooked ham in coke but two of my guests need to leave by 1pm so it'll be a really early lunch and I'm too lazy to get up early to put the slow cooker on!

I have cooked the ham overnight in the slow cooker, just poor it on before bed, ready in the morning.

All these suggestions are making my mouth water.

We have ours with bubble and squeak from Christmas days left overs, pickles, baked beans and crusty bread and butter. Perhaps a fried egg too. I could eat that now!

Just to change things completely, we have a huge lasagne on boxing day with salad and garlic bread. In fact the lasagne is in the freezer already

I hear you there hippo as I'm thinking lasagne for Christmas Eve dinner at lunchtime. That or a massive beef bourguignon.

The idea of freezing the lasagne is attractive though.....

I do it with baked potatoes and home made coleslaw - I use red cabbage, carrots and celeriac, with raw beetroot if I can get it.

I boil and glaze the ham on Christmas Eve, when I am doing all the other prep for Christmas Day, so that I have next-to no cooking to do on Boxing Day.

Oh, and I glaze the ham with grain mustard, brown sugar and ginger preserve.

Home made Cumberland sauce (Delia's recipe) and potato dauphinoise.

Macaroni cheese. Creamed spinach. Fondant potatoes.

Ooh, I've decided on a Boxing Day ham, too. DP, DS and I are decamping to my mum's place for Christmas (DS is staying with her, DP and I are staying in a hotel a few minutes walk away) and I will be doing most of the cooking so am preparing as much as I possibly can in advance. Boiling a ham is one of those things! Then I can glaze it and bake it on Boxing Day. I think that green beans and broccoli, braised red cabbage and some really creamy, cheesy dauphinoise potatoes are going to accompany it (ham boiled in ginger beer and then glazed with ginger preserve). Now I just need to find a big enough ham!

Our 'xmas' ham has always just been there rather than a meal iyswim.

It's cooked on Xmas eve and people can help themselves to it whenever they pass and however they like.
So sandwiches, salad, with eggs etc etc
