First time abroad. Festive recommendations?

Right! So we have embarrassingly late in life finally bought some passports.

We've had a rubbish year and want to go to somewhere this December and spend a few days relaxing and exploring somewhere new. Since we've never been abroad though, can any wise mumsnetters advise where's good to go or what to look out for at least?

Ideally looking for somewhere quiet to sleep, but near enough a town or city that feels Christmassy, maybe a European Christmas market town?

Any recommendations appreciated! Xmas Grin

It's maybe not an obvious choice, but we live in Italy and went to Verona for a weekend at Christmas last year. It was very romantic (home of Romeo and Juliet, you can go see her balcony!) and beautiful at Christmas, a massive Christmas market but not too packed and touristy, mainly Italian tourists. If you can get yourself to Stansted, you can fly to Verona Friday 11th to Wed 16th for £80 for both of you at the moment!

Website with piccies here. It was just like the photos. Breathtaking.

With Ryanair photo to prove I didn't make it up when the prices now rocket!
