Anyone know of a good place to buy a Turkey for Christmas in Cambridge? The butchers we got one from last year isn't there anymore according to dh so I'm looking for a good place.

My bro is getting one from somewhere just outside Cambridge that is a free range organic one BUT it is a very expensive one

I can ask him if you like, I know he ordered it in september as the farm is quite a small one, so therefore not many turkeys and also the reason for the expensive price. iyswim

do a duck or a goose instead, much tastier! and cheaper.

JodieG1 · 11/11/2006 12:12

That would be great RTK, I think we paid about £65 last year for a 16ish lb turkey so I'm not expecting cheap. I don't actually eat meat myself but turkey is definitly preferred by everyone else and tradional

there's the gog magog farm shop along the A1307 (cambridge-Haverhill). The farm is on left hand side at the exit to Stapleford (next exit after the park and ride roundabout). the turkeys are organic and free range (you can see them as you enter). i am not sure how expensive, as we have never bought a turkey there (or at all...), but (all the other meat from) the shop is absolutely fantastic. we buy our steaks there and they are the best around! i think they are taking orders atm.

honneybunny · 18/11/2006 22:32

they have a website as well, but it is not very informative. and they don't actually mention the fact that they keep turkeys.

xmasmummy · 24/11/2006 11:20

bloody hell are you nuts? 65 quid on a turkey. i got a frozen from one from tesco 12 quid for a 7.2kg turkey

TooTickyDoves · 24/11/2006 11:36

And it will have had a truly miserable life xmasmummy

xmasmummy · 24/11/2006 11:43

maybe it will but im afraid im not in a postion to spend that much on a turkey, that about the cost of my whole christmas dinner. as a mum of four young kids i also dont have time to visit all the local farm shops looking for a turket that has been hand reared

faeriemum · 24/11/2006 11:44

im with you on that one xmasmummy

Iklboo · 24/11/2006 11:45

Mums go to Iceland!

We're thinking of getting a Kings Roast from Iceland for £15. It's a turkey crown stuffed with duck and chicken meat (and cranberry stuffing)

Either that or a Bernard matthews TUrkey Breast Roast for £2.50 (depending on if I get a bonus this year!)

Enid · 24/11/2006 11:46

yes I can see why £65 is too expensive for christmas dinner

but I don't buy the no time arguement

TooTickyDoves · 24/11/2006 12:09

I find this too sickening to ignore

Enid · 24/11/2006 12:12

bernard mathews? god how depressing.

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2006 12:15

This excellent website will give you details of local producers in your area.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 24/11/2006 12:21

Oh god - I can't take it anymore.....first it's free-range/organic/ethical/handreared & plucked chickens now we're on to turkeys.

And £65 effin quid for a turkey .

We're having beef.

Enid · 24/11/2006 12:26

yes £65 is very expensive

I would have a chicken though if I couldn't afford a decent one, or beef as saggars says

Lilymaid · 24/11/2006 12:58

I'm going to order mine from the Gog Magog shop tomorrow - though I shall only be ordering a turkey joint or crown. I have good reports of the turkeys in previous year and have of course met them every time I've passed them on the way to the shop! they are Kelly Bronze turkeys. You can also order other Christmas goodies from there and collect from the 21st December onwards - they put up a marquee for collections.
