Christmas tips - postman, binmen, etc

How much do you give them, if anything, and who do you give Christmas tips to? I think my postman is expecting something, he smiled at me this morning for the first time this year. I'm usually broke by now so it isn't an option, but I am happy to tip people this year, I just don't know how much you are supposed to give!

I don't tip - we don't always have the same postmen, there are half a dozen bin men who have gone by the time I get up - would we tip the "general waste" binmen or the food waste, or the recycling - all different?

Ive never heard of tipping postmen or binmen to be honest with you... maybe a small present if youre well acquainted with them but from the sounds of it thats not really the case

Isn't it the done thing then? That's a bit of a relief actually, I was worried my service providers all hated me for not tipping!

And that's a point about the bin men - we do get two different pick-ups next week, I wouldn't know which ones to tip...

I give the postie a fiver but we only have one and he is very helpful with parcels etc. Don't tip the bin men as I literally never see them.

It used to be usual but very difficult for the reasons stated above. Our lovely Postie of 20 years has been moved to another round and we have numerous "bin" rounds

We tip our 14 year old paper boy a tenner at Xmas. Don't know our postie or bin men.

waithorse · 19/12/2014 22:35

I don't know anyone who does this in rl.

Postie a tenner (leaves parcels in porch as knows I'm busy with babies), bin men tenner (as take extra bin bags by side of bin), son's school bus driver a bottle of wine, gardener a selection of real ales in nice box... Basically, anyone I feel has gone above and beyond in some way. Wouldn't have given to postie/ bin men etc where I used to live as didn't go extra mile for you in any way.
