Kindle advice needed

My 10 year old DD would like a Kindle for Christmas. I don't know much about them but was thinking of the Kindle Paperwhite - is that a good choice? She already has an Ipad mini so doesn't need anything which plays games etc.
Thanks.

Can you get a paperwhite for less than £99 from anywhere does anyone know?

LumpySpacedPrincess · 23/11/2014 11:18

The cases look lovely somebody

Dancer you can sometimes get refurbished paperwhites from Amazon, plus they are on ebay if you fancy bidding on one.

Canshopwillshop · 23/11/2014 12:49

Ooh might have to get myself a Kindle just so I can have one of those cases!

I love my kindle paperwhite, I got it in August from Argos. It's the wifi and 3G version which was on offer at £119 with a £20 off voucher for Argos to use in any dept. so effectively it was £99. They had an offer at the time that if you bought a kindle you could get a proper kindle cover for £15 instead of £30. It was a real bargain so maybe have a look on their website to see if they have anything like that at the moment x

Can you get a paperwhite without wi-fi? I want it just for reading device.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 23/11/2014 15:44

Dancergirl, do you mean that you don't have wifi? Then you would need the 3g one so you can download the books. The wifi / 3g is just how you get the books on there in the first place. It is just a reading device.

I love my paperwhite!! I use it daily, i did try the kindle app on my phone, but was too easily distracted with mumsnet and fb! Maybe have a look on eBay for a 2nd hand or reconditioned one op? There are a few professional sellers with great feedback who offer guarantees Smile

The Paperwhite is perfect.

And your DD isn't spoilt at all.

LeopardInABobbleHat · 23/11/2014 16:49

Canshop, I didn't think I'd take to a Kindle at all for reading fiction, so I didn't want to spend the extra on a Paperwhite just for the odd reference book reading. But as I use it extensively now for leisure reading I wish I'd got the Paperwhite for the easier reading (I wear contact lenses and have to swap to my glasses later on if reading in bed). I'd quite like a touch screen too, as I am very lazy. Grin

I bought DS a Nook for his birthday but I prefer my Kindle, although that could be familiarity.

Canshopwillshop · 23/11/2014 17:34

Thank you everyone. I have decided on the Paperwhite for her - just need to look around for the best bargain.

Thanks eighty have bought from Groupon Smile

stucknow · 24/11/2014 11:17

there are different models of paper white so make sure you are getting the latest one ( the 2014 model) as its considerably better than the previous model

LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/11/2014 18:51

Dancer, that would be the Kindle Fire, which is a tablet first and a kindle second. All the others are just black and white reading devices.

I'm holding my new paperwhite in my hands. Grin
