What to buy for four month old?

DS1 will be four months a few days after Christmas. Given that he will have zero concept of Christmas or presents this year, what is actually worth buying him? Should we just put money in a savings account and buy a token gift? Should we try to "buy ahead" for the year to come when he will start to be interested in toys? Should we buy something to put away for when he's older? Anyone got any experience with this and can help? I appreciate any suggestions.

DS is five now, but was 3 months old for his first Christmas. I just bought stuff that I thought he was going to actually need in the coming year instead of spending on toys he wasn't ready for so he got a high chair and some clothes in the sizes he needed.

I did get him a few wee token presents but I can't even remember what they were.

Ours hasn't actually arrived yet! Impatiently awaiting an overdue person but we have got some "Santa" stuff in for the benefit of the other wee ones in the families especially
We just got things baby will need over the next few months such as a swing and a walker and going to get some bibs, bigger size dummies, weaning spoons etc for the stocking.
I think it's nice for the family to make the effort for baby's first Christmas and for them to look back on the pictures when they are older

Dc3 will be four months too. I want older 2 to see him having things.

Pjs
First Xmas bauble
Socks

That kind of thing!

My ds was 5 months last year so I bought toys he would be able to play with in the next few months/year after Xmas, He still plays with most of them now. Shape sorters/cups and things
I did buy him a box of new muslins, which he was delighted with.

It's hard when you have spent so much already for the baby's arrival. I just got a cot activity toy for DS who was 4 months at Christmas as I knew he'd get lots of presents from friends and family.

I wish I had done a little stocking of bits and pieces, dummy, weaning spoons, teething toy, bubble bath, etc. The idea never actually entered my head being on mat leave and careful with money.

I'd say buying toys to grow up to, any larger clothing needed or equipment are practical choices for now.

We bought ours the Harrods Christmas teddy for their first Christmas. It's a lovely Ted, changes each year and is nice as a memory piece as labelled with the year too.

We're buying for DD who will be 7m, but only because otherwise her big brothers will wonder if she's on the naughty list! I have bought a Christmas outfit and some nice toys, plus I'll wrap up small things like teethers, a new cup, some baby bath etc (stuff I would have bought anyway but will boost her pile a bit)
A personalised story book? I chose one this year for my DS (4) but it would be a nice thing to have put away for when they are older.
Good toys for the 6-12m age group include teethers, stacking cups, textured balls, bath toys. How about a treasure basket? it's just a box with fabric squares in different colours/textures and small objects to explore and put in and out of the box.

we got ds things he needed like vests, wipes, socks etc for his stocking and got him some small toys and books - soft blocks, textured book, ball, stacking cups. we also dressed him as an elf!

Ds is getting a Jumperoo which will be put away until he is big enough for it. We do have a 3yo though so baby is getting gifts "for appearances"

Dd was six days old on her first christmas - she got a beautiful pram blanket and a nice outift to wear tgat day.

Oh a personalisd book is a good idea! A friend bought dd one of the "Lost My Name" books and it is stunning!

You could get some lamaze toys, those were the first toy that dd was interested in aside from her baby gym, could also get some soft books and a first Christmas tree decoration, I'd probably also buy things for the year ahead like some stacking cups and bath toys

My older 2 have keepsake boxes from Freya design, this would be a nice gift for a baby. They store all their 'special' stuff tat in them.
Other ideas : Tomy eggs universally popular with small people, galt classic pop-up toy, djeco stacking boxes.
Books? The Ladybird baby touch ones are lovely for babies, and the That's not my .... Series. I bought DD some Emma Dodd books.

Have just remembered that DS enjoyed things with different textures, crinkles, squeaks, basically anything he could fiddle with; so an attachable toy for carseat or pram would be good.
