Thinking of getting a microscope for nearly seven year old nephew. Is he too young? Also wondering if anyone has suggestions of what to buy, up to about £20.

This has been recommended on here before (we don't have one though so can't say how good it is):

I ordered one for my 8 year old neice from Argos. Its 19.99 and is the Discovery Channel microscope set. It gets four out of five stars.

My DD had the same one years ago at that age and loved it.

Thanks a lot, will check these out.

We got DD (6) that Natural History Museum one - I think it's great, considering the price!

I came on to recommend the Nat History Museum pocket one but I see I've been beaten to it! It's ace - so easy to use immediately with no faff, portable and really effective - great fun studying random items found in kitchen like peppercorns and sugar, or for out in the garden. I got it for DS last Christmas when he was nearly 6 and I'm tempted to get a second one for DD (9) this year.

I had a David Bellamy children's microscope in the mid-80s and it was such a palaver trying to mount stuff on the slides and focus the light. The NHM one is a revelation in comparison!

Thanks everyone. Am going to order the NHM one.
