Family boardgames?

Looking for suggestions for family boardgames. The only time we really play them is over the Christmas holidays. Last year we got jenga and set of playing cards, but fancy some boardgames that are fun and easy to play, 2 adults, and dc ranging from 17-8.

Was thinking trivial pursuit, monopoly, scrabble. But think dc might object to scrabble and the 8yr old might find it a bit more challenging than fun.

We've got the travel Guess Who and it us the most used game we own by quite a long way, but it's only for two players.

Qwirkle is really good, as recommended by someone on here (thanks mumsnet) bit of luck, bit of strategy, doesn't take too long, doesn't make me lose the will to live my 4 yr old can play with help, 7 yr old loves it, have played adults only and everyone enjoyed it.

In our house we have a five year old, seven year old, eight year old (highly competitive) and eleven year old plus four adults. We regularly play:

Yahtzee, UNO, cards, pairs, build a beetle, monopoly, cluedo, pass the bomb, ludo...

DD1 has just got Banagrams and Qwirkle for her birthday following recommendations on here, and they are fab! DD1 is 8 and can't quite do the crossword style for Banagrams, but we just play WI her making up words.

We also love Uno (waterproof ones for playing round the pool on holiday), pass the pigs and Battleships, although the latter is obviously only 2 players at a time. I find Monopoly long and tedious but DH loves it and has several versions. Game of Life and a game called Trapdoor are also loved, but both are my old games, so not sure if either have been updated in any way. A last minute present for DD2 last year was WHSmith's version of Build a Beetle, where you have to build the actual beetle out of plastic parts, well enjoyed by the whole family.

Do not ever get Mousetrap. It's still a pain in the arse to set up and doesn't always work!

Don't scramble the egg was a great hit last year too.

Tsuro is a beautiful and easy game that can sometimes only take a few minutes at a time to play.

We like shave a sheep lego game too as a bit of a contrast :)

The London Board Game is great, and Scotland Yard (for more than 3) players. Our other favourites have already been mentioned (Carcassonne, quirkle, Cluedo, dominos etc)

King Of Tokyo is a good fun game for varying ages and the rules are really easy to learn as well!

marking space - all dd 11 wants this year is games!

We play uno and frustration all the time and the card game from Tiger called black peter and headbands which we all love, just makes us laugh a lot.
DS loves scrabble and they both like monopoly.
I have bought dobble as recommended by a friend and labyrinth as recommended by MN.
Am thinking about getting game of life or Yahtzee or cluedo but not quite sure yet. Maybe cluedo because I used to love that.

Battleships
Connect 4
Disney scene it or other scene it games
Head bandz

groovejet · 25/11/2014 14:54

I purchased Dobble last year after seeing it recommended here, it is a good game, easy to play and fun.

We also like cranium cadoo, can be tricky to read the words with the little glasses though. Last Christmas DH memorably misread tap dance and made my dad sit on a chair in the middle of the room and was about to dance around him, luckily I realised in time that he must have made a slight error :D

Family Trivial Pursuit was our surprise hit last year. 2 sets of questions one aimed at adults and one at children. The rules have changed so each game is MUCH faster than the old style Triv Pur. My 3 kids (7 - 10) take great delight in beating adult teams on a regular basis!!

spababe · 25/11/2014 20:16

Monopoly Deal is great - a shorter version of Monopoly played with cards so also handy for taking when travelling

mumma24 · 25/11/2014 22:51

Last word has been recommended to me, so on my list to buy
