Any ideas for a cold starter?

I have limited oven space so would like some ideas for a cold starter that I can prep ahead. I can only think of prawn cocktail but my brothers and dd won't eat that! I'm veggie so any veggie ideas would also be gratefully received.

Soup?
Lots of canapes and miss the first course entirely? (Which is what we do)

Melon boats?

Vegetable pate either bought or home made served with some nice bread, maybe olive or sour dough.

For the non veggie I like pâté on toast or Smoked salmon.

A friend of mine made us circles of pastry topped with caramelised red onion and goats cheese (I'm bad at describing things!). Tasted amazing and would be fairly simple with shop bought pastry.

Canapes

mini Ballinis toppped with:-

pate and a slice of cherry tomato
smoked haddock pate topped with a teeny bit of cucumber
may, slice of hard boiled quail egg, sprinkle of celery salt
cream cheese and salmon
apple chutney with a lump of mature cheddar

a bit of prep involved but there's something for everyone there.

We are having sushi this year apparently!

Easy nibbles
Olives, marinade them with crushed garlic and chopped fresh herbs
Plate of small cubes of cheese, Dutch cheese works well, serve with celery salt
Dips such as hummous served with crisps or vegetable sticks
Blinis with fish pate
Falafel with Tzadziki
Dates stuffed with cream cheese
Celery stuffed with cream cheese

Ooh! I like the sushi idea!

My favourite canapé recipe is circles of puff pastry topped with a little bit of wilted spinach, shelled boiled quail's eggs and a dollop of warmed hollandaise sauce/crème fraiche mix (out of a jar is fine).

Yum. We get quail's eggs at our local Co-op, Waitrose and Morrisons so they should be pretty easy to find generally?

These all sound amazing!
