What exactly is Minecraft?

My 7 year old talks about it all the time.

I see it's a computer game, we have a PS2, PSP and he has an Android laptop. Is it compatible with any of these and is it suitable for 7 year olds?

It's basically digital Lego and perfect for a 7 year old. The PC version has more functions that the psp version but the latter will be more useful if he uses the psp away from home.

Its an excellent creative game much adored by Ds!
It is so good it now forms part of the National Curriculum for design and technology in some countries!

Oh and when you are not listening to stampy you will be listening to dc's own commentary not only on the game but on there life! And this is childdddd xxxxxxx and we are walking, just walking and here is the coooooo oooooop etc etc

my son was supposed to practise his reading over the summer holiday and we've done nothing but he does read the comments under stampy's you tube clips.

Op my dc play it on the xbox and macbook. After you buy the initial game there are little extra packs of additions you can buy, that give extra features in the game. But apart from that you don't need any accessories. We had a xmas thread last year for mine craft bits and pieces. I can tell you the little minecraft toys are a waste of money, my boys never played with them. There is a minecraft torch wall light which was £20 but my 9 yr old adores it by his bed. Creeper satchel, t shirts and hats also went down well as gifts. There are 3 minecraft handbooks which are on offer in quite a few places now

Does anybody know if minecraft will be released on DS/3ds please? My DS has announced he would like it for Christmas and I would rather get it on DS than Xbox if it available. Thanks

My DS 9 adores it. Plays it on laptop and on TV somehow, I think through the PS3, online with his friends who he can meet and talk to. He could easily spend all day on it so we do have to limit him.....he even gets up early to play it! You build and create fun games, Archie says he's learnt about different materials and cool designs of house, his words! YouTube great for tutorials. Grin

There's Minecraft Pocket Edition for iPad, which is about £5, but it's a much reduced version of the full game.

My son told me he wants a mod server for christmas. This is something to do with minecraft. I don't know what he means!! a server is something that stores memory and allocates resources to a network of computers isn't it!? what on earth can he mean. Am I being thick!?

Can some of the parents of minecraft aficionados explain!?

It's made a damp summer tolerable, DD1(16) bought herself it after finishing ber GCSE's and she and 13yo DD2 keep sitting at her lap top creating things and muttering about Creepers, Skeletons and zombies.

It seems to have just the right mix of building, designing and vame play to appeal to 6-106 and to appeal to boys and more creative girls like DD1 at a level beyond SIMs (which is DD2's addiction)

As far as I can see Minecraft = Lego in creative mode and Lego plus distructive little brother if you turn on Creapers etc.

And SIMs is playmobil.

My dcs are 6, 13 and 15 and they all love Minecraft. Youngest got a gift card for Asda yesterday and spent it on 6 plastic Minecraft figures. I am certain the teens were jealous when he unveiled them Wink

A "mod server" is basically a server that your child can rent, and then moderate. Once he has the server and it's all set up, he can then tell his friends what it's called, and they will be able to play on it with him. But he will be in charge.
