I have got a bit cross with him but he seems to think I can just stroll to butchers and pick one out like any other weekend.

Is the butcher going to laugh me out of town or do I just get a grip and get a turkey crown. Bloody hate turkey

His problem, surely? You don't have to stroll anywhere.

As long as he goes today it'll be fine, butchers will have extra in, not just whats ordered, but tell him he needs to go today asap, not 4.55pm!! :)

I forgot to order ours until yesterday... It was a bit of a struggle to be honest. I rang around the local butchers and found what we wanted in the end... I'd call in advance rather than traipsing around!! No one laughed at me though, they were all really helpful!

If it was his job, then he can go and sort it out. And if the butchers don't have one (they probably do), then he can decide on and source something else

Perhaps call the butcher asap & see what's available, if not start thinking of alternatives to turkey. The supermarkets are full of gammon joints etc at the mo. It's just fighting the crowds!

Phone your butcher and ask? I've font that before and they were very helpful. Although they may be a tad busy today so may not answer the phone, in which case get dh to go ASAP.

Ring immediately and you should be OK - it will help that you're a regular customer and the butcher will likely have got in extra for just this sort of thing.

Yup you're right guys, his problem to sort out and he is doing that very thing just now.

Don't worry wig I wasn't going to start sorting it out myself. I am taking DS to party at 3 and was going to collect meat then. I was panicking a bit but told him his bloody mother may not get the exact cut of beef she desires and he needs to sort it.

Thanks for your replies I hadn't even thought about giving butchers a ring, we are small town so not lots of options.

i have never 'ordered meat' in my life, is there really such a big difference to just going to the shop and buying then and there? am i missing something by just going for a supermarket bird?

It depends what you want. If you're having a bird and are pretty certain of getting one you like then it should be fine. If you're planning to have a particular eg beef cut like the OP then you'd best order to be sure you can get it.

Our butcher insists that people ordering turkeys put down a deposit in advance unless they are regular customers - one year they ordered all the turkeys requested and were left with loads of uncollected ones!! How can you forget you've ordered a turkey? They were well out of pocket.

It makes sense to order expensive joints, butchers only have a certain amount of space to store stock, and that is generally taken up by poultry. And my butcher has two queues, one for those who are collecting and paying for orders and one for the rest. The ones collecting usually get priority! Plus they have a website with a click and collect ordering service.

Nipers - with meat it's really a case of the more you pay the better the meat and the better the production conditions for the animal or bird. I can tell you that the free range farm shop loving reared turkeys I buy from the farm shop DO taste a hell of a lot better than the frozen supermarket horror my mil is fond of.........
