Royal icing while pregnant?

What do we all think about eating Christmas cake (and therefore raw egg in royal icing) while pregnant? I will be 6+6 on Christmas Day.

doesn't the drying of the egg whites kind of 'cook' them?

watfordmummy · 19/12/2013 22:17

Salmonella is not held in the white, only the yolk Smile

If you or someone you know is making the icing you can get pasteurised egg whites in a carton in supermarkets for peace of mind?

Just use lion stamped eggs as they have been vaccinated against salmonella anyway so you can eat them with no worries!

newfavouritething · 19/12/2013 23:25

Use eggs from caged hens - they don't eat their own/each others shit so less likely to have salmonella.

I may be wrong but does golden spoon do royal icing sugar which is just mixed with water?

IsleOfRight · 19/12/2013 23:39

Depends. First pregnancy was ultra cautious. Second are everything. Not sure icing would have crossed my mind even in first one though

DontCallMeDaughter · 19/12/2013 23:44

Yes it's fine. You aren't going to get salmonella from dried, refined egg white.

Edwina Currie basically made up the salmonella thing anyway.... There was never as big an issue as we were all led to believe... It was in the press last week Smile

Thank you all for your reassurance. Can you tell this is a first pregnancy? Xmas Grin
