Need some pre dinner aperitif suggestions

What do people have as an aperitif if it's not sherry? We're going to friends' for dinner and I want to take a bottle of something nice to have before the meal. Thanks.

Aperol spritz (aperol, prosecco, fizzy water) - festively orangey red!

Prosecco seems a recurring theme!

The spritz looks like it's exactly what I'm looking for. DH is going to 'make' some Prosecco in the soda stream. He's been dying to do that since he read about Heston doing it.
