Secret Santa - joke?

I'm involved in Secret Santa this year, I always thought the gifts should be a bit of a joke - is this correct?

I've always thought that it depends on who you are buying for. At work, if it is someone I don't know that well, I tend to go for safe and nice gifts, mates however, anything goes.

When me and my close group of friends, known since uni, decided to do it, there was a bigger budget so I wouldn't have bought a joke gift.

So, this post is of no help at all really, sorry!
