I don't get it.
And it is' everywhere'. Endless facebook posts.
It really is silly.
Bar-humbug me.

Agree

each to their own.

I am a massive fan of Christmas, but I hate Elf on the bloody shelf.

I also can't stand Christmas eve hampers.

Never mind I love the rest.

CuntyBunty · 03/12/2013 18:35

I dislike "Elf on The Shelf" just because it is like saying Christmas isn't enough....

Christmas Eve hampers are becoming more prevalent now and boxing day gifts. It is just excessive consumerism and it makes me feel a bit sick.

I look at the Elf on the shelf (and lots of other things too) in shops and think, "This is all going to be landfill soon". Big containers of poorly made tat, shipped over to the UK, where be buy it, then throw it away Sad

CuntyBunty · 03/12/2013 18:35

Ha, x-posted there Jaqueline.

I am terrified of creepy elf so It wouldn't happen in my house and am probably the most festive person I know but that thing creeps me outGrin Grin

youbethemummylion · 03/12/2013 18:41

Christmas eve hampers are new but new PJs on christmas eve has long been tradition in some areas. I moved to the North East in my late teens and apparently this goes back generations but I had never heard of it. Just seems like people feel the need to make everything 'bigger and better'.

waltermittymissus · 03/12/2013 18:41

Hate it. And I'm a tad obsessed with Christmas!

kiwidreamer · 03/12/2013 18:41

Phew lucky no one is forcing you to get one then.

Doitnicelyplease · 03/12/2013 18:42

Agree! Love Christmas time but not a fan of Elf on the Shelf, it is just OTT, and a bit sinister "the Elf is watching you" etc.

I reckon most parents will be bored/over this in a year or two but their kids will be expecting the bloody elf to show up and amuse them for the next 6+ years Ha!

olibeansmummy · 03/12/2013 18:44

I hate it too and Christmas Eve hampers and the word hamper itself lol..

stickysausages · 03/12/2013 18:45

We have a knitted elf, who leaves little treats under DS' s pillow when he feels like it when I can be bothered I've also made an Xmas eve hamper, just an extension of the new jammies he usually gets.

Realised this year (he's 5) that I'm not going to get many more years of the magic, so am making the most of it

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/12/2013 18:46

I have not come across Christmas Eve hampers - is that extra presents, when people are going to get presents the next day??

Boxing Day gifts I can understand a bit better - there was a tradition of servants being given the day off on Boxing Day to visit their families, taking a box of food with them (hence Boxing Day, I believe) - but that was not in addition to Christmas gifts - that was the Christmas gift.

Oblomov · 03/12/2013 18:47

Glad it's not just Me.
Love Christmas.
Just don't like this Elf thing.
Was it the same last year? Just that I missed it?

New PJs on Christmas Eve, yes. Silly elves, hampers & Boxing Day pressies, emphatically, no.

AnnBryce · 03/12/2013 18:50

I hate the word 'Hamper' too, olibeansmummy !

LaRegina · 03/12/2013 18:51

YANBU - I think it's creepy. Am v glad it wasn't around when we first had the DC so it's not one of our 'traditions'.

Also don't get CE hampers.

I have also blocked Norad Santa on our computers after DC1 told me years later that seeing that was what made him realise Santa wasn't real as it's so obviously fake Sad So I don't like that much either...

cosikitty · 03/12/2013 18:53

Never heard of it and no idea what you are talking about!

BobCrotchstitch · 03/12/2013 18:55

I would have done it but DS is already at the very sceptical stage, I think an elf now would tip him over the edge Xmas Hmm
We are also having a CEH for the first time this year. New PJ bottoms all round, a bottle of Baileys, tub of Heroes, gingerbread house kit, hit chocolate and marshmallows, Yankee candle (part of a set already purchased) and chestnuts for roasting on an open fire
TBH nothing that we wouldn't have bought anyway, just packaged up and arriving at a fixed point

LaRegina · 03/12/2013 18:57

Bob keep him away from Norad Santa if he's getting remotely sceptical then...

olibeansmummy · 03/12/2013 18:59

Glad it's not just me AnnBryce! I must add I do love, love, love Christmas, just not all this extra 'stuff'.

DziezkoDisco · 03/12/2013 19:09

Oh thank fuck, I thought I was being mardy. I love christmas, but i love the traditions. Also not looking forward to 3 weeks of daily updates on fb. Very dull.

Oblomov · 03/12/2013 19:14

It's like teddy from the nursery. Competitive parenting. Here's elf on the xxxx , here's elf having a good time flying to Tahiti, here's elf making brandy butter ..... Oh do fxxk off!!

I like it. It's fun and sweet

I'm not doing it but happy for others to do it for their DC.

People are just making a little bit of happiness for their DC, this isn't something to sneer at.
