Urgent Christmas pudding help needed please

I have just put the Christmas pudding mixture into it's basin and the recipe says to cover with greaseproof paper and foil and tie with string, should I do this or just put the lid on the basin came with a lid ...any help, it's the first time I have made one.
Please help my pudding is sitting in the kitchen without a top on.

there is a diagram in good food magazine on how to do it.... you pleat the greaseproof in the middle and the foil to allow for expansion. then tie the string round the pot to hold it all on....

I'm just about to make the christmas pudding vodka from here to go with my pud!

Thank you have gone with the paper and foil and not the lid. It's a present for my sister so has to be good.
