My dad's offered to buy our turkey for Christmas this year....has just text to see if I want an m&s turkey crown rather than whole bird...

my question to you is....Do I? (and, will it fit in my freezer? or will I have to sweettalk dp's mum into letting me use some space in her chest freezer?)

ty Smile

Why not ask your Dad to pre-order it and you can pick it up nearer the time?
Then you'll save valuable freezer space , it'll be fine in the fridge if you get it a couple of days before and you don't run the risk of forgetting to defrost it.

I don't eat turkey, but I'd say there's a heck of a lot of waste with a whole bird, with the M&S turkey crowns it's 6-10 or 10-14.

Very nice of your Dad to offer to buy it Smile

I much prefer to have the crown than a whole bird. All cooks at the same rate and less waste as previously said.

I also second getting it 22/23rd instead of freezing.

Good thinking batman, I haven't text back yet.

He does random stuff like this every now and again...last time was a giant box of wash powder on offer that I'm still using now Smile

ditto. parents buying. turkey crown ordered. to collect on 23rd December. sorted.

PoppyWearer · 13/11/2013 19:31

We've stopped having turkey at Christmas but before we stopped would have a crown, so much easier to cook!

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 13/11/2013 19:38

Same as everyone else, collect it day before, no defrosting.
Cooks better and no waste.

nailslikeknives · 13/11/2013 19:44

We had an m and s turkey crown last year and it was easy and delicious so we'll probably get one this year too.
I bought it early, froze it and then let it defrost in fridge for a couple of days before Xmas day.
It's a yes from me Grin

A crown takes up less oven space too.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 13/11/2013 19:53

Be aware that the queues to collect m and s pre ordered Xmas stuff can be grim. My mum used to walk past m and s on her way to work at 7.45 and see people queuing for it to open at 9 on Xmas Eve morning.

right, turkey crown it is & I shall ask dp's mum to watch the kids in case the queues are awful. thanks Smile

And M&S turkey breast joint is very nice too. We've got it a couple of years for a midweek after work Thanksgiving-type dinner, worked out perfect every time.

If you are not a domestic goddess looking for ten gallons of stock for the freezer, leftover turkey pies of different sorts for a week and enough soup to feed an army, a crown is a great option. And it's a HECK of a lot easier to carve, especially if you aren't regular roast people.

I used to get a turkey crown from M&S years ago, as my work used to give vouchers instead of a hamper to employees. The benefits are it is just the breast meat on the ribcage so is a compact item to fit in your oven and you can fit other things in too; a whole turkey (particularly the smaller ones) has large bones with less meat on and a lot of people find the legs and wings less enjoyable anyway so it's wasteful unless you make a curry or something which makes it more appealing.

We used to have the 6-10 portion one for 4 adults and a child, plenty for Christmas dinner and sandwiches next day.

HappyAsEyeAm · 14/11/2013 14:22

I always get a turkey crown from M&S every year. They're great - no waste (we all like the breast meat best). Even though there is only 6 of us to Christmas lunch (inlciding two children), I have ordered the one that feeds 10-14 as then there is plenty left over for sandwiches that day and Boxing Day. I would 100% recommend Smile
