Nintendo 3DS XL

Hi all, DD5 has asked for the above for Christmas.
What are your opinions? Is it good, will she like it?
We have an ipad which she plays on quite alot, so think it will get played with but want to know if it is a good toy?
And does it have to be the 3DS XL or previous versions? and do all games work on all of the consoles? Rather confused by it all as you can guess!!

Am pretty sure that the 3d version is not suitable for under 8s, but you can turn the 3d off. We have just got ds 5 a nintendo ds 2d, which plays all the 3ds games but in 2d and it's a lot cheaper (smaller screen though)

games specifically marked as 3DS on the box will only work on the 3DS/3DS XL. All the other games that are just marked nintendo Ds will work on all the different versions of the ds.

Ds games can be played in any Ds console (3ds/xl/dsi/2ds etc). 3ds games can only be played on 3ds/3dsxl or the new 2ds (although on the 2ds it obviously won't show the 3d effect).we have got Ds 3dsxl for Xmas with 2 3ds games (managed to get it for bargain price of £104 from tesco a few months ago when it was on sale and I added a £15 discount code). Ds is ony 5 and has not asked for it but has asked for the 3ds lego city game which will not play on his dsi (which I bought last year refurbed from blockbuster) so I have turned off 3d aspect and old dsi will be handed down to Dd.
Obviously you have to pay extra for each game whereas apps on tablets are free and i would say better for gaming than say browsing the web (we have disabled we'd on Ds').hth

So, just to make sure I've understood this...

All games will play on all DSs but the 3D bit won't work if it's not a 3DS?

Is it worth getting a 3DS for a 6yr old and accept that you need to turn off the 3D or is a 2DS sufficient? Is there a 2DS XL?
