Tablet for a 4 year old?

My DD loves playing kids apps on my iPad but when she is using it, I'm a nervous wreck; in case she drops it or spills drink on it Grin

She starts school next year and from what I've seen from going along to the open days, the kids use iPads. Shock

So, I would like to buy her a tablet so that she can play on it but also become comfortable with using one; in preparation for school.

Can anyone recommend one? Be honest, if you think I should just stick with the iPad. It will be a false economy to spend £100 on something that's rubbish. Thank you.

TBH I would just stick to the iPad and get a really decent protective case and screen protector if you haven't already. I have strict rules when my two (4 and 6) play - no taking it upstairs, no food and drink while playing etc. We've had it for about a year and no problems (and that's actually without a case - TBF I am perhaps less paranoid as it was a hand me down 1st gen so I didn't spend anything on it let alone hundreds of pounds)

If we ever buy or are given (very generous friend who gives away his gadgets when he upgrades) another iPad we would probably 'officially' give the DCs the old one, but I wouldn't ever buy them one at this stage.

No need to worry about needing to use one at school - they are so intuitive that it takes next to no time to pick it up and anyway she's already used yours!

I'd just spend the budget on toys :o

The kindle fire is good for apps and has a decent sized memory.

My DM has a Nexus which my 2 DCs who are 5 and 7 love, and get on as well with as our iPad.

It was a lot cheaper, is a bit smaller which they find easier to hold and has a great range of apps to download.

The Tesco hudl is getting good reviews too.
