Already got an iPad 2 iPhones and 2 laptops!
My question is I have an 8 yr old son who has asked for an iPhone, iPod.
He already has access to my iPad and iPhone and 2 laptops, so not sure what the extras are that he would get if he had his own apart from it being his own if that makes sense?

We don't download music or anything I just use a the devices for surging web, what else could be son use and iPod or tablet for? He also hD slot of homework based on Internet access aswel and am nervous to give him access to it whenever if he had his own?

Hope that makes sense?

No I wouldn't. My 6yo DD's friends have iPods of their own but when she asked for one I said "don't be silly, we already have an iPad to play with :)" and she happily accepted that. She is limited on use anyway (30 mins a day) so there's no point in her having her own device.

if he has access to it i wouldnt..maybe give him one of the laptops or ipad?..which you can always go on but to him its his.

DH really wanted to buy ds age 5 a tablet for Christmas. We're not as I think we need to be discouraging screen time in our house, not encouraging the dc to use them more than they already do. I figure there's time for them to have their own device when they are teenagers not when they are still in infants.

Thanks guys, I think I'll give it a miss this year and at least I know I can control access for now, just need to look into all the uses of the gadgets we have so ds can get the most out of them ??

How short and sweet Hmm

Personally if you have all those gadgets in the house there doesn't really seem any need for him to have more. However there is a distinct advantage to him having his own (even if it's one of your old ones) in that you can set up all the controls you want on it to limit his access. For example our iPad has one click ordering turned on in Amazon. DS has yet to discover this (as all shopping is "boring") but if he had his own device my account would not open if he opened Amazon IYSWIM?
Also he surely will not do homework research in an iPod? So perhaps he may not need permanent internet access anyway (depending on what he uses it for)

Yes fair point cross stitch, I think for now safest thing is uk "give " him the laptop for homework research etc and let him download music on the iPad.....

DD1 (5) has her own iPad, well, it's an ex iPad of mine. I got sick of her programmes and apps on mine so it was less painful to turf her stuff over onto a separate one. I've disabled everything else including the internet, any games she want to play that require access, such as the cbeebies site, she comes to me and I set her up on the laptop.

It's worth it so that I don't have to have pictures of the latest Hello Kitty virtual cake that she has created on my iPad!

Ha, yes we have an endless stream of Toca Hair Salon/Toca Tailor photos on our family iPad. Although they appear on my no-children-allowed iPod too, thanks to the cloud :o
