Dd1 loves books so was thinking of getting her a box set for Christmas, she is reading Percy Jackson at the moment but I can't seem to find a Percy Jackson box set ( so have ordered her a couple of the individual books ), she loves fantasy and magic, really enjoyed harry potter, loved war horse, doesn't like girls books and doesn't like classics such as Enid blyton.

Any ideas?

Is she too young for the hunger games? Or hitch hikers guid to the galaxy?

I've been beaten to it, but I will still say The Dark is Rising series. I was a bit older when my mom dug her old copies out of the loft, but I still like to read them now (aged 30).

I read Under Sea Under Stone about 10 times as a kid and tried to read the second book and struggled after about two chapters. Am reading it now why'd you think DD got it for her birthday? and still struggling but about half way through. I think I just wasn't expecting all the magic and time travelling as there's none of that in the first book. Will persevere..

Thank you, loads of ideas here. She has read the hobbit and a few Nania books but wasn't that keen on them ( but at the time she was so hooked on Harry Potter that nothing was as good ).

She seems to like the same books as DS1 (11). He is currently reading the Cherub (child spies) series and thinks they are fab - do have some bad language in though.

My Dsis is 10 and is currently engrossed in the 2nd Hunger Games book. She also enjoyed Michael Morpurgo books and Eva Ibbotson books, particularly Journey to the river sea

I've just bought the Ribblestrop set on Book People for my 10 year old DD.

I had a flyer from the book people the other day and they defintiely had percy jackson box set at good price (I ordered it!). Sorry if that has already been mentioned. It was literally only about 2 weeks ago, if that.

The Magician's House series is very good, although not well known.

DD has just finished all the dork diary books and really enjoyed them as a light read. She is also 10.

Lemony Snicket's "Series of unfortunate events".

Diana Wynne Jones - I loved all her books at 10 (still do now!). Try the chrestomanci books (charmed life etc).
