Does anyone have any views on this?

Older child/ tween aged would like.

Reason for wanting this(I think)

Playing games
Reading(always has a book in hands)
Keeping in touch with friends by using face time
Wanting an email account to keep in touch with friends

Is this the device I should be looking at or can you recommend another?

TIA

I wouldnt get a fire as it is so locked in to amazon, you cannot access google play apps.

I personally would get a nexus or have a look at the new tesco hudl.

You just put the kindle app on so you can access all your kindle books but you get a lot more choice with your apps.

I too would have a look at a hudl. I don't like how locked down the kindles are.

I was given a kindle fire HD as a present.
Plus points, nice screen, free Ap every day.
You can get to the file system and chuck stuff on and off without bloody iTunes in the way, but it's still a clunky file tree compared with windows.

Minus points, not all aps available that are on google play.
I can't get it to spell check MN properly
Silk can be a dreadfully slow browser.
Ads on home pg. annoy me, I want my own photos.
No way of putting aps in folders without opening another 3rd party ap.

It just isn't as sleek and initiative as this iPhone, much as I hate iTunes.

Don't know about email, this and my desktop is confusing enough. Emails in a third place, help.

Fire HD is heavy and the battery life is less than a day, so it's no substitute for a paper white or other dedicated kindle if you read a lot.

you should note that facetime is an apple thing, so won't work on other tablets. are the friends actually using facetime or just video calling via another platform/app?

It is thicker & heavier than an iPad.

The camera is one-sided only (i.e you have to be looking at the screen to use it which I imagine would be a PITA for anyone using it as a main photographic device/for anything other than selfies)

I don't think you are too locked in to Amazon, but in common with all android devices, there isn't one central place for apps that's as comprehensive as iTunes.

I changed my browser from silk to dolphin because the latter supported an app that allowed flash to work because Android no longer support flash
