fancy going to stay for a couple of days for my birthday. Will take DD with us. Which do you recommend? Thanks!

I would suggest Bath. Especially if you are staying a couple of days. Bath is beautiful as are the Christmas Markets. If you are staying a couple of days with your daughter, you could also visit Longleat, which is not too far away. I haven't actually been at Christmas time, but I've heard very good things and will be going at Christmas for the first time this year and am very excited :)

I haven't been to the Bath Christmas Market, but I have been several times to the York St. Nicholas Fair and it is lovely. York is a great place to visit at any time and there is plenty to do, apart from the super shopping. There is Jorvik, the Railway Museum (and children of both sexes enjoy that), the York Dungeon; oh, and the Castle Museum which I loved as a child and my children enjoyed, too.

My DD and I used to drive down from the north east and park at the McArthur Glen Shopping Outlet, take the park and ride into the city and spend most of the day there before taking the bus back to the Outlet where we had even more retail therapy! Oh, and we always used to bring back lots of lovely food from that section of the market - we haven't been for a few years (DD's two pregnancies got in the way) but we are intending to go this year.

I am sure, though, you will enjoy whatever you decide to do.

I suppose it depends on where you live. Bath Christmas market is lovely, as is Bath. Much nicer than York IMO (though I've never seen the Christmas market there).

If you decide on Bath, the American Museum just outside Bath does lovely Christmas displays. If you can, I would advise going to the Christmas market relatively early on a weekday as it does get very busy (I suspect the same is true of York).
Oh, and Bath has the advantage of the natural mineral water spa - a great way to unwind from all that shopping Wink

Bath Christmas market is lovely. We are local and go every year. It is always very busy though which can take some of the fun out of it but I imagine that is the same everywhere. Can highly recommend Longleat at Christmas too. Lots of family things to do in Bath. Plenty of places to eat and the shopping is fab. The Theatre Royal does great pantos too.
