Why do I need an ipad?

Theres nothing i really want / need this year for christmas, so thinking of.getting family to club together to buy me an ipad, for no reason other than it seems like the thing to have!

However, i dont really "get" why i everyone else need one as...

  • i have a laptop
  • i have an android smartphone
  • i have a kindle touch

The only thing i use any of these for is facebook, follow a few blogs, instagram, mumsnet, a little online shopping... and thats pretty much it!!

I travel to work for about an hour each day, but im driving so obviously wouldnt use it then!

Dont do any much foreign travelling :-(

So, please tell me why i need an ipad?!
Or is it just a silly daft notion?! waste of money

iPortal costs me 5 euros a month and it disguises my iPad location and gives me access to UK websites, so I can use Netflix, iPlayer, Sky Go on my iPad. As long as you're not using it on the two different appliances at the same time you can have it on your computer etc. It runs well and there are no annoying adverts. You can just a UK or USA based address. On the iPad when you want to turn it on you just turn on a VPN in your settings mode, on the computer it's just a shortcut on the desktop.

cos they are just lovely Smile. We too may become tablet owners over Christmas - I have coveted them for some time but can now "justify" it as it will mean that the DC's and the DH an play games on it and I can have the pc back for important things like mumsnetting Grin

littlebellsmum · 29/11/2012 21:40

Oh and then when they go to bed, it becomes mine, all mine - and yes, that includes DH

ItLooksLikeRainDear · 29/11/2012 21:50

DH is a bit of a gadget man & bought me an iPad for my birthday 18 months ago & while I was grateful I was thinking 'why would I want this, I have a lap top, we have a desk top, I have an iPhone...' didn't realise how wrong I was!

I LOVE my iPad & use it all the time, it's so much more convenient than the lap top as it's so quick to access. DS 2.10 loves it too as I've downloaded some apps for him. Go on get one!

Just to add to conversation on VPNs. I have downloaded a similar iportal for free from tunnelbear & used skygo, bbciplayer etc abroad.

Rite, last question, i PROMISE!!

Is it true that teachers get discount on them? If so, how much?

That may just clinch the deal!

oh gawd I'm going to be the odd one out....

i have an ipad and rarely use it. In fact, it's only DS3 who ever uses it to play his toca boca apps Blush

I have an iphone, so that's a lot handier to use out and about. And I have a laptop at home. I convinced myself a few months ago that I really did neeeed it and now it sits redundant and unloved by me. I keep trying to like it, but am now thinking I might sell it!

cuteable · 30/11/2012 11:02

Is there anyway to transfer data from it? I take it theres no USB port.

Also anyone know where the cheapest place to buy them and which version is the best value for money? We are thinking about getting 1 for xmas but they seem soooo expensive when I can buy a laptop for cheaper. Just want to explore the option.

twooter · 30/11/2012 11:09

If you don't use it, it's just because you haven't found the right apps yet. Back to the App Store for you, fingeroffudge!

SoupDragon · 30/11/2012 12:11

Cuteable, I use Dropbox to transfer files between my ipad, iphone, desktop, macbook and DSs laptops.
