Please help me understand Skylanders......

My LO who is 6yrs has been asking for Skylanders for Christmas...I have said no but now starting to think "why not"!! He has an Xbox and an iPad, can a starter pack work with both of them? I take it that I will need to buy a starter pack for Christmas Day but do I need to buy any of the other figures?

The only thing I don't like about Skylanders is that you have to keep buying more figures to move on in the game...am I right there? I just feel I am going to spend a fortune on figures just to move on etc!! Are they really a waste of money??

The Dss got this game last year for xbox. They still play it. I don't think there is a starter pack for the ipad and we do not have all the figures. Probably best to get one of each element though.
Skylanders giants is now out so you may want to get that and then buy some older skylanders as they are compatible with the portal of power.

First find out which one he wants - Skylanders Spryos adventure (which came out last Christmas) or Skylanders Giants which has just been released.

Can help you then as both my sons are obsessed by it!!

Hi, thank you for your replys...I am going to but Skylanders giants as they are new out. I have been reading and it says there are 8 elements. If I have one figure from each element will he be able to complete?

I have been led to believe that is the case. However there are also battle packs to purchase that open up areas that otherwise can not be reached.

Can double up with tesco clubcard to get them and game sell them second hand

If he has friends who also have the game, they can swap their figures around - that's what I'm hoping DS is going to do (I've got him the original game because the figures are cheaper)

Thank you myboys for your reply. I have just bought the starter pack online, but will have a good look around before buying extra figures! Will I need to buy any extra figures for Christmas or will the three that come with the starter pack be enough to start with?

Thank you for your reply Dow. How does swapping them work? Do they still need the figures if they have opened up a certain area in the game??

The figures "die" and cant be played with for a while so it depends how long you want him on it.

Could you get some figures for his stocking or any-one else need ideas of what to get him?

I am getting Skylanders for my DS who is also 6. However, I have been told by several mums and also by 2 assistants in HMV to get the Spyros Adventure ones before Giants as the 1 follows the other.

I think it does. My boys are getting giants for xmas and will be able to use the figures they already have on the new game but (of course!!) they want the new figures that are being released - especially the giant "giant" ones!

He is only allowed 1 hr a day on it and that's weekends only..so only 2hrs a week!! (Over christmas and holidays he will be allowed on it 1hr a day) I am going to sound a bit dopey...but why do the figures die??

I really do find this all a bit mind boggling! Maybe I should reconsider then and get the spyro adventures then??

The figures get "killed" and whilst they are "resting" they cant be played with.

Why don't you ask your son which one he wants - either the spyro adventure or the giants. Would be a shame on Christmas morning to have him disappointed by not having the one he really wants.

I've bought ds the giants starter pack for ps3. Do I need to get him extra figures then? If so, how do I know what ones to get? Confused.com too!

I hope DS isn't disappointed by spyros. I shall be most put out if he is. I am going to tell him that he needs to to spyros first.

I found out which other figures to get by googling 'best skylanders figures'. As I said earlier giant figures are more pricey so I reckon (knowing DS ) the idea of more things will be more appealing.

Makemine-I am so glad it's not just me who getting a bit confused by all these Skylanders figures!

DS got the Giants starter pack at half-term and it has not been a problem at all not to have the Spyros one. He has been through all the 'hundreds' of levels once now with just the three characters that came with the starter pack. His friend has since brought some spyros figures round which opened new tasks/powers but not any new zones. For Christmas he would like more characters from the giants series.

Just a little update. I bought the giants starter pack, triple pack and 1 giant figure last night at smyths and then managed to get spyro figure from eBay! The gentleman in the shop recommended getting the giants starter pack as he said we might have trouble getting all the figures for spyros adventures! I have also bought 2 books form asda about all the figures and different elements etc...thank you all for your help on this thread.
