My ds is 42 and lives in Turkey. I asked what he would like for Christmas and he replied...socks! Do you think he means it? I have bought him a boxed set of Calvin Klein socks and a multi pack of striped ones from Amazon B F. I also got a DVD set of the Olympics as I know he missed most of it. Will that do or should I try to be more creative?

It sounds like he doesn't want you to go to too much trouble doesn't it? Posting abroad always costs a fair bit on top.
I'm sure what you've already got will be absolutely fine.

Has he been there for long, might there be some British foodstuff he might miss, (thinking along the lines of something light that won't break, does he have a sweet tooth?).

He has lived there since 1992 but we visit at least once a year and he usually has at least one business trip a year.
He loves whisky so I might get one of those little boxes of miniatures of single malt as a treat.
