What is best for 6 yr old - cd player or mp3 player?

Dd (6) has only asked for a few small things from Santa so I wanted to get her something bigger for her main present. Was thinking of a cd player and a few cds (One Direction and that sort of tat!) but dh thinks that an mp3 player and docking station would be better. Don't want to get her an ipod as I think she is too young and it would end up getting lost or wrecked. Are there any good alternatives which are a bit cheaper?

Our 6 yr old has an ipod with a docking station. It's a refurbished shuffle so only cost us about £25 from the apple store. But you can get lots of decent (not ipod) mp3 players - Creative Zen make lots of different ones and are good according to my techie friends .

Having said that, when she wants a new 'album' we tend to buy the CD and upload it onto her mp3, rather than buying the mp3 version online. She likes having the disc with it's little book in so she can look at it and learn the words, and I like having the disc as a back up.
