Skylanders Giants

My ds has the original Skylanders for the Wii and would like to get the new Giants that have been released. I have had a look and am unsure wheather I need to buy a new starter pack or just the booster pack. He already has the portal.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as am looking to get it quite soon.

Will just need the booster pack as starter pack comes with another portal which you don't need.

Booster pack.

Although the new portals have a lead to plug into the console so they don't need batteries - hurrah!

ChippyMinton · 11/11/2012 12:25

Matilda - get the Giants starter pack with portal.

gregthepeg · 11/11/2012 12:25

Thank you, was hoping that was the answer cause its cheaper although to be fair he loves it so not really grudge it.

The portal that comes with the Giants starter pack will plug into the wii and not need batteries. I presume your original is like mine and is wireless and eats batteries? In which case, get the starter pack definitely.

gregthepeg · 11/11/2012 12:45

Just seen the comments about the starter pack having the wire to connect to the wii. Think I will just get the starter pack as the extra money it costs will stilll be cheaper than having to buy and hunt out all that batteries.

Thanks

We just use rechargeable batteries. About £8 for batteries and charger.

WeAllHaveWings · 11/11/2012 22:28

We use rechargables too. Prefer it wireless as ds sits quite far back from the Wii and dont like the trailing wire across the floor as he jumps about a lot!

MaryBS · 12/11/2012 08:09

I couldn't get rechargeable batteries to work in the portal, it kept telling me it needed new batteries.

mumnosbest · 12/11/2012 09:27

We've only got cheap/no brand ones. We do have 2 sets so 1s always charged.

WeAllHaveWings · 12/11/2012 15:40

rechargables work in ours too, we've got this charger and extra batteries of same make and type

You can play the game without all the characters, but its useful to have different characters with different "elements", as these will unlock different regions. We borrowed a friends skylanders characters to complete some of the levels.

There is another discussion somewhere on MN about whether to buy original or Giants. But I guess at some point you'll end up with both!

mintchocchick · 12/11/2012 19:28

This is new to us too but DS2 who is 7 is desperate for it this Christmas.

If you buy the Giants starter park to begin with, can you then add in the other characters later or as an extra present to play with the giants ( thinking a single character would be ideal for big brother to give)? So do non-giant characters play on the same game/ at same time as the giants? or are they totally different games sets.

Sorry bit clueless!

vodkaanddietirnbru · 12/11/2012 19:36

you can buy single giants characters to play on the giants game and there are individual original skylanders characters for use on the original game. I dont know if they are compatible across the games e.g. dont know if giants characters would work on the original game and vice versa

vodkaanddietirnbru · 12/11/2012 19:42

from googling it looks like the old spyros adventure stuff will work on the giants game but not the other way round

mintchocchick · 12/11/2012 20:44

Thanks! That sounds a bit complicated. So maybe better to get the Giants starter kit and add non-giant characters rather than get the spyros starter set as then the giants can't be added?

vodkaanddietirnbru · 12/11/2012 20:50

yes I'd go for the giants kit and then you can add extra giants and/or the spyros characters afterwards.

There seem to be a lot of characters around this year unlike last! We went for another starter pack to get the powered portal, no more tears when we've no batteries charged! Giants is a shorter game than the original, my boy finished it in a weekend! The official guide has proved a massive hit, he reads it most days.

OFFER

Just seen on HOTUKdeals, that Morrisons are selling off Skylanders Starter packs (the original) for £20, if they have any in stock.... worth a look if you are near a Morrisons!

mintchocchick · 13/11/2012 20:49

In terms of the individual characters, are there any which stand out as being favourites? I'm thinking of getting the Giants starter pack for me and DH to give DS2 and then suggesting DS1 and maybe my brother gives him an individual character or two. But can't decide which to choose.

So any favourites and how many, if any, extras do you need to make it a good game to play straight off?

WeAllHaveWings · 13/11/2012 22:28

There seems to be only 4 of the giants released so far, TreeRex which comes with the booster pack, then Crusher, Swarm and Bouncer. We've found from the original Skylanders ds and his friends all like different characters so it's hit and miss.

ds seems to always like the ones that are specials so we've got him them, there is a Legendary Bouncer Giant in toys-r-us, and a Granite Crusher Giant in Tesco. Also in toys r us is a Legendary triple pack of the small characters for the new game with JetVac, Slambam and Ignitor (Slambam and Ignitor were in the original game, but these have different moves).
