LAST CHANCE! Closes today! MN Christmas appeal 2012 - Nominations and Donations thread

RebeccaMumsnet · 08/10/2012 17:18

We've all seen the mini chocolate snowmen in the shops and the cries for all Christmas-based threads to be moved out of AIBU to the Christmas topic Grin - so that can only mean one thing! It's time for the MN Christmas Appeal.
Little bit of history for those who are new to the whole idea: in the past, Mumsnetters offered to donate gifts to other Mumsnetters in need over Christmas. And you also nominated Mumsnetters to receive these gifts. Each year, a particularly saintly Mumsnetter volunteered to match up the donors with the nominees and organise a mass posting of presents.

Two years ago, we felt the Appeal had grown so large that it was too much for one person to co-ordinate - so we moved it onto the MNHQ to-do list and this will be our third year.

Here's how it works.
You have until Monday 22 October to nominate a fellow MNetter who you think has gone over and above, offered you some lovely advice, might need a little help or someone who is generally an all round luffly person.

You can nominate here

You also have until Monday 22 October to pledge your donation for a fellow MNetter. Vouchers are easier to match but we have had all sorts in the past from Christmas trees to hampers and re-gifted items. Nothing is too small.

You can donate here

We then contact all of those nominated by the 29th October and ask them for their address and age/sex of their DC, this information will need to be back to us by Friday 9 November

Nominees and donors will then be matched and we will send those who donated, their matched nominees address by Friday 23 November so that gifts can be sent well before the final Christmas post. Parcels are addressed to the MNetter of the House (unless otherwise stated) to try to maintain anonymity.

This whole process is anonymous, we do not pass over RL or Talk names.

If you would like to get a gift for someone specific then it is better to arrange it with them directly. As much as we would love to facilitate all of your Christmas wishes, we simply don't have the brain power capacity

Donors and nominees are given a number to quote to say thank you to one another following the gifts being sent out.

Any questions about the frankly terribly confusing process, please do ask.

May we be the first to wish you a very Merry Christmas Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 08/10/2012 17:26

You can just do one or the other, that is fine. No pressure either way.

RebeccaMumsnet · 08/10/2012 20:16

@ChaosTrulyReigns

Could you confirm please, RebeccaMumsnet, is there a macimum number of posters we can nominate?

There's a right load of good souls on here and I'd find it so hard to whittle down.

And what would happen if a poster got nominated 173 times? That would be one pizzed orf Postbox Operative. Smile

Any guidance would be great.

In short, you can nominate as many peeps as you like. However, we would like you to think long and hard about who and why as there are a limited number of donations and we don't want to be in a position where we have more nominees than we do donations.

I will stress that this hasn't happened before, we normally have lots more donations than nominations.

10 nominations does not equal 10 gifts necessarily, we make sure that all nominated folks get something and then we take a look at reasons for nominations, number of children, number of nominations etc etc and allocate the remaining gifts.

Some people may get one small gift, others may get 10 small gifts or one large gift - it's all vair complicated. Confused

@everydayaschoolday

Rebecca/previous participants if donating toys, should they be wrapped and gift labelled with child's age, or would parents prefer to vet the gifts first and gift wrap themselves for the children? I'm a happy OCD wrapper, but understand if this is not the done thing Smile.

It is totally up to you. Some people like to wrap the gifts and put a note in for the parents and others like to send the gift and some stuff to wrap it and others just send a gift.

It is totally up to the individual

RebeccaMumsnet · 08/10/2012 21:55

@ChaosTrulyReigns

Sorry RebeccaMumsnet, I thank you for your explanation, you are considerably more clearer than her wot did it last year.

erm, I did it last year Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 08/10/2012 21:58

@TodaysAGoodDay

I've donated. I was tempted just send lots of gin to MNHQ but decided not to suck up Grin This giving is a wonderful idea, thank you.

Just out of curiosity, MNHQ, how many recipients were there last year?

You say you're NOT sending gin and then you ask a Q! [cheek] Grin

A few hundred matches IIRC, more nominations than donations.

"I will stress that this hasn't happened before, we normally have lots more donations than nominations."

"A few hundred matches IIRC, more nominations than donations."

Um.

Rebecca, you utter tweedle.

ha ha ha < goes to bed> the first one is right.

MORE DONATIONS THAN NOMINATIONS Blush

@BigBroomstickBIWI

Hah. And you snurked at my log in fail earlier ... Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 09/10/2012 09:11

@Whistlingwaves

ohh Rebecca I can't pm you on my phone. I put school age donation. Can you add preschool under 5 too.

I'll PM you now.

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 10:49

@Kingcyrolophosarus

"Donors and nominees are given a number to quote to say thank you to one another following the gifts being sent out."

Last year, I was nominated, no idea who by or why, and I didn't have anyone to thank, no name or ref
I was truly touched.

And what happens if the person you nominate has namechanged? Can you track them?

Sorry for the silence, i will try and answer some Q's now.

Yes, we can trace NCs

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 11:03

@ScaryBOOAlot

Can you donate more than one thing? I've never donated before but am in a (slightly) better position this year and would like to. Should I write it all on one donation form?

Yes, you can.
It helps if it's all on one form but not essential, although you may get two mails when it comes to matching.

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 11:06

@skyebluesapphire

Does this thread get publicised elsewhere on the site? Just wondering how everybody finds out about it if they dont stumble across it like I did.

It is stickied in active and will go in the newsletter but do feel free to share the link on threads you are on Smile

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 11:13

@SchrodingersMew

Nominated and donated but I couldn't leave the "who is it for" bit blank but left a comment at the bottom. Is that okay?

That is fine.

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 11:16

LolaDontCryOverSpiltBleach Grin Grin Grin Typo just made my day!

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 11:19

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 19:56

@Milliways

If we put "voucher" can the type of voucher be chosen when we know who it is for? Or should we say Amazon/Boots/Laithwaites/Tesco/ELC or whatever?

Either way is fine Milliways, just 'voucher' or a specific voucher, it is up to you.

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/10/2012 19:58

@MainlyMaynie

I filled in the form to donate, but I said I would choose a gift when I know the recipient. I've never done this before and just read the thread and think this isn't the right thing. Should I have decided what to give before I filled in the form?

Again, this is fine. Some people liked to be matched with families with similar age children so they know what sot of thing to get but others are happy to wait and see.

RebeccaMumsnet · 15/10/2012 09:23

@BlameItOnTheCuervForHumanBlood

I have a question, can we nominate non-troll banned mners in recognition of all their good advice, support and friendship over the years, and because they are having a time of it? Esp since you hope that hq will relent when she's done her time and let her back?

If they are not a MNetter then we probably won't include them in the MN secret santa. Feel free to PM me.

RebeccaMumsnet · 15/10/2012 15:37

@littlemoon14

Have offered to donate. if your not giving vouchers what sort of thing would you donate if it was for a child for example?

A toy, games etc. Anything is fine, no matter how big or small. Maybe think what your child or a child you know of a similar age would like?

Nominations and Donations are currently neck and neck, please share across the boards, only one week left to get them in.

OliviaMumsnet · 17/10/2012 19:48

Hmm
Thanks for this, we will have a think at the Towers about how best to alert folk to this.
Thanks
MNHQ

RebeccaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 09:55

@BigBroomstickBIWI

I appreciate that it must take a lot of effort to run the Christmas appeal,[massive understatement emoticon] but you do seem to be closing it very early - and still there are people who haven't seen it. I really think you need to leave this open for a little longer, and definitely put it into 'chat' with a sticky.

Hi BIWI,

We have put it in the latest box and in the Newsletter, it has been stickied for two weeks and to give us time to sort it all out, we have to close it today.
This year the response has been terrifying amazing.

We are going to give it one last push now...

RebeccaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 10:06

@Sparklingbrook

Can someone who has bought vouchers PM me and suggest a value. Ta.

Hi Sparkling,

We get vouchers from £5 - £100, donate whatever you can afford Thanks

RebeccaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 10:30

No you don't.
It does help us if you can, but it's not essential.

RebeccaMumsnet · 23/10/2012 09:20

The nominations and donations are now closed.

RebeccaMumsnet · 25/10/2012 14:54

@BigBroomstickBIWI

Was that a large sound of "phew", Rebecca? Grin

How'd you know? Wink
