I have the most enormous, heavy artificial tree that stands 7.5ft high.

At the beginning of December, when the tree goes up, DS will have just turned 11 months and, presumably, will be cruising around as well as crawling. Would I be absolutely mad to put my tree up and rely on a stern 'no' every time he makes a lunge? Or should I put the tree behind the playplen? Or sacrifice the tree until next year when he understands a little bit more about what he should and shouldn't touch?

My plan, if I did put it up, was to leave the bottom 1.5ft or so without decorations or lights, thus preventing him from doing a snatch and run.

We had an artificial tree when DD was 1 and 2. It wasn't that big an issue to be honest. The only mistake we made was putting chocolate decorations on. Child has no willpower Wink

Put it up, he might not even bother with it. If it turns out to be a problem then think about taking it down. It's not likely that he'd be alone in the room with the tree unsupervised anyway is it?

always had a real tree, DCs have never bothered with them

the cat on the other hand....

How high is your ceiling? Could you put it at the back on a box or lowish table?

DS2 was 14 month last Christmas, he played with the tree when it first went up but them he left it alone, he wound sometimes add things to it though so by Christmas day there was crayons and babybels on there to.

Yes to putting edible decorations up high, he ate 3 candycanes in about 5 minutes while I was sorting some washing

Dd never really bothered with trying to grab it when she was that age (turned 1 the week before christmas) but was mesmerised by the lights so certainly would put one up.

Neither if mine were that interested in the tree. It'll be fine!

We always have a 7ft real tree and the dc have never been bothered they love to look at it but have never pulled it down. I on the other hand have knocked it down trying to reach the last chocolate decoration Blush

Oh I'm so glad the consensus is that it'll be fine. DP had me convinced we wouldn't be able to have a tree until DS was at least 2/3 but I just couldn't imagine the living room without a tree at Christmas.
