Innotab or Nintendo DS for DS?

What to get?

He was 4 in July so will be 4.6 when Christmas comes.

I am really unsure what to get him for the best. I wonder if he will be too young yet for the DS but could grow into it or do I get him an innotab which he will probably grow out of as I think they are only until age 6.

Any thoughts? WOuld love to hear from any parents with a child the same age with these gadgets!

Thanks

Not had an Innotab, but have had Mobigo and DS.

IMHO, he is not too young to manage a DS under supervision. My 3.5yo has one, only plays with it occasionally but he really likes it and can do it himself, as long as it's as easy game that doesn't require being able to read.

DD was about 4.9 when she got hers, again she has learned how to play with it really quickly much quicker than me They take and mess with photos on them, record and distort singing and silly noises, as well as the games.

It gets annoying when they want you to help sometimes, esp when you don't know how! But I think they are pretty good. Mobigo was a waste of money.

Had bad experience with Innotab. Already got DS which is very good.
I would actually recommend an ipod touch - apps are cheaper than innotab and it lasts - just make sure you get a good cover for it to protect it!

I wouldn't do an ipod Chips as we have an ipad (which I never bloody get to use because of apps he loves!)

I think I will go down the DS route. Now to decide which model - I believe there is one not suitable for unders 7 though.l

DD is the same age and plays her older brothers DS with no problems. You can pick up games really cheaply now too.

We got her the Leappad last xmas and its good but the games can be very expensive.

We also have an Ipod touch and it is great and loads of free apps are available but they are very delicate. DS dropped it a few weeks ago and the screen smashed even though it was in a protectie case.

the 3DS 3D function isnt suitable for under 7's but you can turn the 3D off. DD (8) and ds (5) both have a 3DS but dont use the 3D as 1) ds is too young and 2) dd can't see in 3D! Some games are only suitable for the 3DS which is why we got the 3DS in the first place. Older DS games can be played in the 3DS too so that's quite handy too.

I too am thinking about a Nintendo DS for Christmas for my DS who will be 5 in October... We bought an Innotab last year and to be honest it hasn't been worth it, for him anyway. We bought a game cartridge thing and downloaded a few apps but it eats batteries for fun and although he had a Vtech Camera and they're compatible, we've never really done much with it.
Are there any DS games that are good for younger children like ours? Considering getting some second hand from ebay, if any are recommended.

Thanks for the comments about innotab. That has made my mind up. Going to talk to the people in game tomorrow about models before buying online.

My two like the Peppa Pig games for DS, and can do the Dora Snow Princess game without help, but it only takes about 20 mins for them, to totally complete it TBH. Charlottes Web is awful - skip that one.

I like Super Scribblenauts myself Wink

The DS is 64.99 in store at Comet just now if you can find a Comet with stock left. The innotab (which my DD loves and is suitable up to age 9) is 25.00 at John Lewis in store.

I've just rung my nearest John Lewis and have got them to put an Innotab aside one for me. Only the pink one was reduced but my DS loves pink so that's fine.
