wine

sticks of cinnamon

grated nutmeg

star anise (because it looks pretty)

cloves stuck into slices of orange (so they don't get stuck in your teeth)

orange juice (optional)

brandy (optional)

Bottle wine. Orange / satsuma or whatever. Dozen or so cloves. Couple of cinnamon sticks. Good shake of ground mixed spice. Lump of ginger if you have it?

Warm it but don't boil it or the booze will evaporate!

Brown sugar to taste once it's had a good 20 mins / half an hour to infuse.

It really is hard to fuck it up completely, you can add / subtract various other things like lemon peel, star anise etc.

honey and/or sugar

basically all of these are optional apart from the wine, and the quantities are just "some"

Grumpla · 24/12/2011 15:11

It's nice with a shot of sloe gin too Wink

Trills · 24/12/2011 15:14

Or rum, Or port. Or any other extra booze :)

good tip is keep it in slow cooker

Isthatajoke · 24/12/2011 17:04

That is a good tip, do you just cook it on low for a while and then put it on warm?

Ginger wine if you've got any lurking at the back of the drinks cupboard and powdered ginger adds a lovely warming heat. I add everything that's listed above and orange juice if it's needed. Use the cheapest wine you can find or have a DH that makes homemade wine that is frankly only fit for mulling

I have a recipe where you dilute the wine a bit with water, about a third of the volume of the wine. It works quite well
