Speculoos spread

Does anybody know where I can buy this in the UK/ a good recipe to make my own?

Obviously we've had the actual speculoos this week, but it reminded me of the spread and now I really want some! Has anybody seen it anywhere?

wtf is speculoos pliz?

ScatterChristmasCheer · 12/12/2011 22:11

They'e Dutch (and Belgian I think) biscuits, sort of ginger-y and cinnamon-y, made for St. Nicholas's day (5th/6th December rather than 25th, but I thought Christmassy enough to go here Xmas Smile) .

I LOVE this stuff but have never seen it in the UK Sad

ScatterChristmasCheer · 12/12/2011 22:23

Hmm, maybe I should have put this in the food section. Will ask MNHQ.

NO, I've been looking as we've just finished the 4 jars we brought back from Brussels in August. Will watch thread with interest.

ScatterChristmasCheer · 12/12/2011 22:26

Oh, I'll leave it here then if a few people have spotted it.

I have been racking my brains for 5 minutes thinking to myself "I know I've seen this somewhere recently"
Unfortunately I think it was when we went shopping in Auchan near Bolougne -
so not that helpful really, unless you happen to live near Dover and can nip across Xmas Sad

BehindLockNumberNine · 12/12/2011 22:32

speculaas! It is delicious. Don't have a recipe though, sadly.

5318hoho8 · 12/12/2011 22:38

here?

ScatterChristmasCheer · 12/12/2011 22:40

That's how I'd usually spell it BLNN, I thought it looked odd with two Os, but I never write the word, so googled it!

Ah, that stuff is amazing! Afraid I've never seen it here though - I have a friend in Holland who brings it over for me.

BehindLockNumberNine · 12/12/2011 22:42

I have never seen it with oo, but have just googled it too and you are right... sorry Blush

Lovely lovely stuff though...
Have you tried websites such as Typically Dutch? They sell Dutch stuff (but beware postage prices are steep!)

ScatterChristmasCheer · 12/12/2011 22:43

That's the one 5318008, but I can't bring myself to pay £15 postage!

My cousins live in Dorset, might have to ask them when they're next going across.

I love speculaas :). I just ate the last of our batch from Sinterklaas feest :)

I just asked my Dutch DH about speculaas spread and he has never heard of it Confused

ujjayi · 12/12/2011 22:45

Just googled speculoos. Dutch DH wouldn't have heard of it as its Belgian/Flemish as opposed to Dutch.

Luminescence · 12/12/2011 22:52

Speculoos liquor is even better!

VinoEsmeralda · 12/12/2011 22:55

speculoos eBay. Have you ever had schuddebuikjes? Also very nice, especially on a White sandwich with butter

ScatterChristmasCheer · 12/12/2011 23:16

Yes, I think I got slightly confused! Part of my family is Dutch, which is why I know the biscuits as speculaas, but it was actually a French friend who gave me the spread, but because the taste is the same I just presumed it was Dutch as well IYSWIM.

I've never seen those before vino, they look a bit like tiny pepernoten.

I really want some hagelslag now! The ones in the red box with a cat on it, that opens into a funnel to be poured out.

No idea where you can get the spread (I did find a blog saying Lotus were thinking about introducing to the UK, but that was years ago), but if you haven't tried speculoos chocolate it's amazing

reckoner · 13/12/2011 10:50

My kind of thread :)

I have just got some iced gems for in the stockings. You can take the girl out of Belgium...

I've only tried the speculaas spread once at my mum's but never seen it in the UK.

BrianButterfield · 13/12/2011 11:04

I once - ONCE! - saw speculoos Haagen-Dazs in Tesco. It was lush. Never saw it again though.

ujjayi · 13/12/2011 11:14

Scatter - we have an abundance of hagelslaag in the cupboard :) DH and DCs have it on toast. I reserve my indulgence for sprinkling on top of real hot chocolate (have to banish all thoughts of calories when partaking of that particular indulgence!) Love pepernoten too. We always buy huge bags in November in preparation for Sinterklaas. We usually use Holland At Home or stock up when visiting family. DH always puts in requests for "drop". I don't mind the salted version but can't bear the sweet. Also, bags of schuimptjes - delish.

My DCs are very happy to be 50% Dutch :o

My mouth is watering at the thought of speculoos Haagen Dazs.

VinoEsmeralda · 13/12/2011 23:27

Behindlocknumbernine- recipe for pepernoten is:

250gr self raising flour
150gr butter
125 soft brown sugar
20 gr speculaaskruiden ( or 4 tsp mixed spice and 2 tsp cinnamon)
4 tbsp milk

Mix to a dough ( fairly dry) and make marble size balls which you flatten slightly. Bake for 10-15 minutes in a preheated oven at 160c

Speculaas slightly different amounts I think, if you like can find& translate recipe.
