DH just informed me he would quite like a Kindle for Christmas. I don't understand them!

I have seen this

Is that everything I would need to buy? How do you put books on it.

Sorry for being thick Xmas Smile

That is the one I got for my Birthday
I have only had it a month
I got a case and a light with it too as they are not backlit
I have bought my books through Amazon. It's really quick, just go to the ebook section.
The next time you turn your Kindle on they are automatically downloaded from Amazon (as long as you are somewhere with wireless internet)
The more expensive one has a keyboard and 3G so you can download books wherever you are.
I love my Kindle, I haven't even used it much yet.
Can't really understand why they didn't give it a light though.

Wow thats amazing. So when you buy a book you put your kindle number in or something and its sends the books to you - thats so clever!

Was the light expensive. The kindle itself has blown my budget so not sure I can manage any books or accessories!

I love my kindle - I've the one with the keypad but dh has the one without it and if I was buying another I wouldn't bother with the keypad, or a backlight. There are plenty of free books, some are crap but many are ok. He will love it but just get the basic, cheapest one would be my advice.

You can get books really cheap & sometimes free Grin

FruitShootsSantaandLeaves · 08/12/2011 11:45

I went for a light that took a normal battery rather than the button type which are more expensive to replace. They come in all shapes and sizes and prices!
I got this one which slides into a slot on the M-Edge case

jumpyjan · 08/12/2011 11:47

Thanks all. Think i'm gonna go for it. More than I was planning on spending but he deserves it and I guess I can steal borrow it too Xmas Grin

Jumpy don't buy any books as if it's on a different account it won't work

ReshapeWhileDamp · 08/12/2011 13:27

You could always buy a simple battery-powered clip-on light if your DH likes reading after lights-out, and suggest he gets himself a lit case at a later date. Smile I recently bought one for DH which was all of £3 on ebay, works fine. Rolson, I think.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 08/12/2011 13:40

If you buy the new Kindle (with no keyboard) they only have wi-fi not 3g, so you MUST have access to wifi to be able to download the books.

vinegarpuss · 09/12/2011 18:41

just to add - it might be too late but Tesco had them for £79 last week

mrsmplus3 · 09/12/2011 23:16

i just ordered one on amazon for my 15yr old son. i cant wait to see his face, its a total surprise gift. it was 89 pounds incl free delivery. he has a bedside lamp anyway. we'll let him buy any books he wants from our amazon account on christmas day, another fun gift.

mrsmplus3 · 11/12/2011 20:21

oh well, the surprise kindle is ruined. a member of the family has let it slip that that is what i have got him for christmas. i am gutted. my son says ive not to worry, that hes delighted hes getting that but i am truly gutted the surprise is ruined. was really looking forward to seeing his face. oh well...

mrsmellow · 12/12/2011 10:03

You don't need a light - do you normally attach a light to the other books you read?
It is a great gift. If you don't have wifi you can also download books to the kindle by attaching your kindle to the computer.

mrsm- he's still surprised, just a bit earlier than you planned!

mrsmplus3 · 12/12/2011 10:46

thanks mrsmellow. im getting there, slowly but surely (haha)
