Help! 3yo DD is convinced she is getting a Barbie for Christmas

Was v pleased with self for getting DD's Christmas presents sorted early this year. She doesn't have many dolls but likes to play with them and is always talking about ballet these days, so got her this ballerina doll.

Anyway over the last few weeks she has started going on and on about getting a Barbie for Christmas. She is convinced that is what Santa is going to bring, even though I have been very noncomittal and even said I didn't think Santa could get Barbie this year. She mentions it several times a day. I don't particularly like Barbie but am resigned to the fact that she may end up with one eventually. But surely age three is a bit young?

Not sure what to do really. Am a bit worried that she will be really upset about not getting Barbie. But I think two dolls would be overkill.

Any good advice?

I used to hate those Corolle dolls too but she got given one of the baby ones a couple of years ago and she adores it, has played with it almost every day. Which is why I chose another one in the same "family". They are everywhere here (Belgium), all the toy shops stock the clothes, accessories, etc.

Can't take it back as got it online... also got a doll for DD2 who loves to steal her big sister's one, so there's a slight theme going!

Could get the Barbie for somebody else to give, just to spread things out a bit though. I suppose I thought that Barbies were for older girls, i.e. 6 or 7. Don't know why, really.

I don't really like barbie (except the one in Toy Story 3 :o) but I'd maybe make an exception. I did for the Snow White dress DD was desperate for.

Can I ask if these are older 3 year olds we are talking about as DD is 3.3 and doesn't even know who barbie is.

I loved barbies as a child but was thinking of getting them at 5/6ish is that too old?

If I ask DD what she wants for Christmas she just says 'a blue/pink/green present'!

To be fair, Barbie is a bit of a slapper compared with Sindy...I had Sindy dolls too.

I do think MN is funny sometimes. Everyone gets their arse in a knot about pink toys and being called Ms but mention Barbie and suddenly it's "only a toy" when actually it's sowing the seeds of a false body image from far younger than the magazines etc do.

My dd was 3 last friday she saw 'barnbie' in an advert break on milkshake in the morning. It was about three months ago and since then she's wanted a pretend kitchen and a barnbie. Apparently santa only lets you have 2 choices!!! Suits me santa.

Just spoke to DH. We think we might get Barbie for Christmas and save the other doll for her birthday in the summer. She will probably be starting ballet classes around then (has been desperate to do ballet for a few months now, but local school wont take them until they are 4) too so it would tie in with things quite well.

So now, which Barbie do I get? I'm quite tempted bt the toy story one as she was so endearingly stupid in the film...

BTW DD1 is 3.4. I didn't think she knew who Barbie was either... I thought we had years ahead of us before the pester power started!

I remember getting into a tizz when ds1 was 3. I had got him all his presents and then at the last minute he announced that Santa was bringing him a bike. He was also bringing his friend C a bike.
So I worried that if C got a bike and ds1 didn't, then ds1 would wonder why C had been deserving of the bike when he wasn't.
So muggins here went off and bought the bike on Christmas Eve.
Ds1 never played on that bike. And C didn't get a bike in the end so I felt even more stupid.
So, I decided from then on that Santa wasn't worth getting upset about!

DD2 is just 7 and Barbie has long been outgrown by her and her classmates - Im afraid Barbie probably peaks at age 3 -5 and by 6 -7 its Bratz and Moxie Girls (or if you are lucky like me, Pokemon and Moshi Monsters, with a hefty dose of Sylvanians thrown in).

Glad you are getting her one - it would be such a disappointment on the day, and Barbies are only a few quid.
