ipod touch or DS?

I've put this on the geeky bit but thought the christmas lot may have a comment or two!...

Ds1 is 7, nearly 8 and has yet to have a DS or any handheld gaming device. We have a family Wii and DH's old xbox that DS enjoys. Am thinking of getting him a DS for xmas but have recently started to swing towards the ipod touch for the following reasons...

  1. DS1 LOVES my smartphone and is always wanting to play the games on there.
  2. He doesnt tend to get too hooked into a game but likes to try lots of games so perhaps the cheaper aspect to the ipod games would be better for him?
  3. Its more than a gaming device so could be used in place of a portable DVD player (although I guess the screen is small?) and he could access the free internet gaming sites like FRIV which he enjoys.

I had a similar dilemma as dd plays with my iPhone all the time when we are out and about but at 5and half I decided to get the ds. For an almost 8 year old I'd probably go for the touch as it will grow with them. Ds2 is 9 and has a shuffle and would love the touch but he's already got a psp and the shuffle.

iPod Touch
it's fab and DS 10 adores his - I also love the Plants vs Zombies Game and the app that tells you what stars you can see in the night sky!

Definitely iPod touch. Ds has both and uses his iPod touch much more.

The games/apps are (mostly) much cheaper, ds happily watches films on it and is starting to get into music and downloading stuff.

I don think they are as sturdy as a DSi but by tha age, they (hopefully) can star to take better care of things.

Definitely Ipod touch.

My DD has both and plays with her ipod far more than her DS.

The great thing about Ipods is that you can download spelling tests and times table apps on there - so its not just games.

I also think that if you put a big plastic case around the back, then there's less to get broken too - no dodgy hinges, no cards to insert - nothing to go wrong really.

Deffo ipod touch. Mine have both and get far more use out of that than their DSi.

I was thinking 3ds earlier but now ipod touch from hearing what you guys have said. I think he'll get more out if it.... ds would want to try lots of games so that will be so much more cost effective

If you do go for the iPod touch, you can get it all set up before you wrap it.

There are loads of free apps you can download to get him started. Just make sure they are age appropriate by checking the age recommendation. You can search for the top free apps too. Some apps have a 'lite' version that is free and then you can download the full version if you like it.

That will make I even more fun to open on Christmas day - as long as it is fully charged!

Definitely Ipod touch, my dd loves hers. Get an 'Otterbox' case for it (Amazon) and it will be very well protected.

iPod does much more. DS games are a rip off.

Yes defiantly do the set up first and get a case.
One of the mums at school has a chunky ridged rubber one that even let's a toddler not drop an iPhone.
