That about says it all really. I don't really want to go over £60, I've done a little research but I'd like some personal opinions please.

For that price I honestly would go for a reasonable pair of binoculars concentrating on a good size field of vision rather than trying to get as high a magnification as you can.

We got this one for our 8.5 yo daughter last Christmas. My BIL is a professional astronomer and this is the one he recommended for a child of that age.

The price is good. It's easy to use, delicate parts are well protected, and you get a decent, clear view without having to do too much fiddling about.

Our daughter is doing a Space topic at school at the moment. She took it into school last week and reports that her friends also thought it was cool!

And if you're happy to go upt to £60, you could get this to go with it!

On paper I have to say that one does look impressive.

I have just bought that one, it does look like it should do the job and if he's still interested in a few years then we can all club together and get him a professional one. I didn't think he'd be too impressed if I gave him binoculars, even if he might see more with them, I think the look of it is half what he wants.

I love the mobile thing too, but he's got a similar one so I've got him a couple of star maps and a book about the moon.

Thanks for your help :)
