Nintendo 3DS or not

My eldest D wants a Nintendo Ds. Word at the school gates is that it's all about the 3DS. I have no idea what any of this means

She is 4 does she need 3Ds or whatever?

I think when it came out there was a big fuss about the 3d being bad for the eyes and as a result not suitable for under 7s. if she is 4 I would go for a DSI instead. The games are pretty expensive.

According to my dd, all of the boys in her class are not too impressed with 3DS and prefer their DSi.

I don't know if that's true, or indeed if they all really have ds and 3ds, but it's worth noting. Grin

if she is only 4 I wouldn't get the 3d version as it is meant to be bad for their eyes. a normal DSi would be better for her.

I've heard several reports that N3ds' are causing migraines and eye problems in children.

Coinsided with the fact that they have dropped in price by half almost as soon as the reports came out was enough for me not to buy one. If these reports were unfounded they would not have dropped the price by so much.

I would get the normal DS lite or the DSi.

my mate just got his for her DD who is 6 and had similar worries - apparently there is a button/setting where you can turn the 3D off until they're older and so use it as a 2D?

molepom · 01/11/2011 19:16

Then why not just get the cheaper one now and get the 3ds when it's dirt cheap in a few years when kids are old enough to use it?

sunnyday123 · 01/11/2011 19:44

because then youre buying 2! The 3ds is only (or was) only £20 more than the 2D in argos recently.

I've just bought one for DS and had a right going over the parental controls.

You can limit the amount of time the 3D is on, switch it off completely, adjust the depth etc. It's all under the parent locks.
DS only really wants it because it has a joystick which he prefers to the D pad.

If you really don't want them playing 3D, then go for the DSi XL. Bigger screens etc

I really don't want my two to have a 3DS but all the new games are 3D now, the games they have asked for are all 3D and so can't be played on their DSi's which they got last Christmas.

It's a real pain because if I did buy one I would turn off the 3D anyway. Wish they would bring some good new games out on 2D

upthealdi · 04/11/2011 09:32

I have the same problem Matildathebrave. I went into Game last week to ask about the prices of a DSi and they said don't buy one because all the new games are 3D. They said I could switch off the 3D.

Does anyone know if you can only play 3D games on the 3D version? Or can you play games that were made for the DSi on it?

PersonalClown · 04/11/2011 09:41

3DS will play all DS lite and DSi games.

I've tried out Toadboy's before I out it away for Christmas.
