Angel chimes

Remember them? They were the centrepiece of our Christmas table right through the Seventies. You lit candles under them and the little angels travelled around tinkling as they went. Has anyone seen any lately? I would really love to replicate carefully selected aspects of my childhood Christmas dinner.
Not the 48-hour sprouts though.

Ooooh I have seen them somewhere. I became all nostalgic...

Hold on while I think.

BeaSpellsaLot · 10/11/2010 17:54

Some here

BeaSpellsaLot · 10/11/2010 17:55

Loads on Amazon

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 10/11/2010 17:56

That's the one! Brilliant, Bea, thanks ever so much. I'm going to have a retro Christmas. Wanders off, singing Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...

We had a big one when I was a kid.

Our local shops are selling them - the tealight type.

RubberDuck · 10/11/2010 17:59

I bought some last year - they are naff, but I adore them. The kids love them too :)

Slubberdegullion · 10/11/2010 18:03

oooh I love them too.

The PIL have the advanced angel chimes from germany with the wooden blades at the top and the whole scene of little wooden people going round on the bottom.

it doesn't go ting ting ting though

RubberDuck · 10/11/2010 18:14
Shock

But the ting ting ting is the best bit!!!

Slubberdegullion · 10/11/2010 18:17

It IS the best bit.

The German one is a bit of a wonderous thing though I must say. In fact iirc it may have two layers of circling tableuxes. Top one is the Nativity (nice) and bottom one is St Nick plus snow ballers and the like.

You can look at it for hours.

They missed a trick not giving it a ting though.

ChippyMinton · 10/11/2010 18:58

We have a twirling Germanic tableaux too - three tiers IIRC, but it positively whizzes around under full candle-power and can lead to dizziness in the drunken viewer.

Also have brass snuffer in the shape of an angel - lower her skirts gently over the flame...

Slubberdegullion · 10/11/2010 19:00

ooooooooh

get you Chippy with your 3 tiers and slutty snuffer

ChippyMinton · 10/11/2010 19:03

Is it too early to go up the loft do you think?

Takver · 10/11/2010 19:25

I've got two sorts of Angel Chimes (smug emoticon).

The old fashioned ones that stand on a table with candles in a holder, and a rather fine set that hang above a fire or whatever.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 10/11/2010 19:32

Ooh, loving all this oneupangelship. I've come over all nostalgic.

I've decided to forgo our boring modern Christmas countdown candle this year and make a proper advent wreath with the four purple candles and the white one in the middle. I bought an oasis ring today specifically for the purpose. I suppose it's too early to start on it now?

We have angel chimes because my family had them every Christmas when I was a child and they make me feel all nostalgic.

Ours have stopped tinging though Sad - not sure how or why! Maybe I need new ones...

iheartdusty · 10/11/2010 20:41

I bought these for DC last year!

but I was a bit disappointed ..the one we had when I were a lass was quite sturdy, and came out year after year.

The ones I got last year were very flimsy, sharp edges everywhere, and tbh as soon as you hooked in an angel it fell out again.

maybe there are better quality ones around?

worm77daisy · 10/11/2010 20:48

Chippy I've had a sneaky peek in the attic already!

I would really love some angel chimes they remind me very much of Christmas when we were little. But as DD is 2 this may not be such a great idea for this year.

tassisssss · 10/11/2010 20:50

I have some. I love them. You get them in John Lewis I think.

ShirleyKnot · 10/11/2010 20:54

Oh God, that one on Amazon - Oh God.
