Why I believe in a literal six-day creation

I have only arrived at this view within the last year. Before that, my views on creation were more in line with the evolution theory that we're taught at school/university. I studied science and have a degree in Biochemistry. I thought God probably created things in line with what we know (or think we know!) about physics, biology, geology and chemistry and didn't have an issue with very long 'days' that were not 24 hr periods but perhaps hundreds of thousands of years covering each part of creation.

When my pastor announced at the end of last year we'd be doing our next sermon series on Genesis, part of me was worried because I know he's a literal 6 day-er and I felt sure I'd want to argue with everything presented. However I decided to just let things take their course and shelve what I thought I knew and go with the flow. (Of course later I found out he's also a science graduate as are most of the other members of my church, so it's not like he's ignorant of the underlying topics!). He suggested the commentary "The Genesis Account" by Jonathan Sarfati, which covers in detail chapers 1-11 and addresses various scientific claims.

It's amazing what you discover when you go through Genesis verse by verse. It's too easy to just read that first account of creation and miss things. I could go through those but I won't, because want to give you one stand out fact that you can consider for yourself, if you don't believe in the literal 6 days. This really got to me, and I realised creation could not possibly have happened over the huge time scale of millions of years that's presented to us, no matter how elegantly, and that it has huge implications.

When humans were created on Day 6, evolutionists say the rest of creation had already been around for millions of years. There had been disease, death and natural disasters according to the fossil records. However up till this point the creation was apparently 'good' according to God and there should have been no death or illness because Adam and Eve hadn't yet been created and so hadn't fallen and caused the whole of creation to fall, and death to be introduced. If evolution were true, then Adam and Eve would have been standing on a fossil graveyard of death and struggle over millions of years that God called 'very good'! The reason for the vast amount of buried plants and animals in rock layers is of course the Flood of Noah's time. In reality, plants and animals had only been in existence for three whole 24 hour days when Adam and Eve were created. Humanity fell pretty rapidly, probably within hours of creation. Then, the processes of decay and eventual disease and death began. This hit me like a sledgehammer and resulted in my belief that God did, in fact, create the world in a literal 6 day period. Otherwise disease and death had been ongoing for millions of years prior to the Fall and God is deceiving us. Unthinkable!

The commentary I mentioned gives detailed evidence for how the layers of fossils formed after the flood began to recede and answers many of the tricky questions of geology, in fact it goes into detail about all that is written from Genesis chapter 1 through to 11.

This post isn't about who is right or wrong with their beliefs on this subject, but I felt led to write about how I came to my view, and honestly it's been a great relief, to simply let the words of Genesis take their literal meaning and show God's marvellous plan of creation unfolding!

I remember reading the Charles Darwin, towards the end of his life, asked "why do people believe what I said instead of the truth in the bible".

I wish that were true but it seems it likely isn't a true story. Hopefully Darwin saw the light before he left this world!

I studied religious studies at university undergraduate and communications minor. I covered Christianity and other religions. This was such a long time ago and I am not an expert, I just know how to write an essay ok and had an interest in the areas that I studied. I wanted to say I did one module in another area and ended up turning my degree into something of a liberal arts/Combined Arts degree in the end with a major in religion and minor in communications. I did one module on creation and science and looked at the Big Bang theory.
I thought it could work the Big Bang with cosmic inflation with there being a Creator God. Some scientists do agree with this.

As to terms of the 6 days. I don’t see it as a scientific rigorous document.
I do agree with what it says but I don’t put a time frame on the days. For example to some people 12pm counts as the next day. The Holy Spirit didn’t go into detail with this and I don’t take it further. I am comfortable with leaving it as that. I think that we were the first in God's creation.

There is much scope for differences of opinion on the creation in Christianity. Anglican, Orthodox members can have mixed views about what they think about the creation story.

I think turning creationism into a science of its own has caused tension between scientists and young earth creationists. I am unsure if this is productive for the faith this dispute. I like to think that God has ways that are mysterious for what we do not have description of.

Thank you for sharing GentleSheep, everyone is entitled to their opinion and it is good to see your commitment to study.

Quoting a few quotes from a astrophysics magazine called "Understanding Astrophysics: The Comprehensive Guide" (June 2023) on the topic of science.

“For many, there’s something very appealing about the Big Bang Theory, quite apart from its scientific veracity. With its image of a single, dramatic moment of creation, it conforms to earlier mythological and religious accounts”

“While an expanding universe is consistent with the Big Bang Theory it doesn’t necessarily require it”

“Yet the Big Bang prevailed in the end, and the steady state picture fell by the way side. Thanks to further observational evidence” “Scientists found it impossible to reconcile this with the idea that the universe has always been expanding at the relatively slow rate we observe today. Instead they had to assume a very brief period of Cosmic Inflation during the universe grew at a truly enormous rate”

Though surely disease and death are just part of the natural order of life. Is it not just humans who try to avoid these? Why should your view of what God might view as Good be correct?

How does carbon dating fit into all of this?

Are you a Christian? This thread is in Christian Mumsnetters and so is primarily for a Christian audience, otherwise I'd have posted in for the general audience. 😊

As a Christian I disagree that disease and death are part of the natural order of life. They are highly unnatural and not God's original creation which was perfect and without these elements. Why does death feel so wrong? Because it is.

God only creates perfection, He does not create that which is liable to decay and death. That's why His Good doesn't include those things.

Carbon dating? There are problems with that (covered in the commentary I quote, which goes into those in great detail). The bare bones are: 1. Assumption of a constant isotope decay rate. We don't understand all the factors affecting these and can't be sure of them over an alleged billion years. 2. Assumption of initial conditions - we simply don't know how much 12-C existed in the pre-Flood biosphere, so cannot assume the 14-C to 12-C ratio we have today. 3. Assumption of a closed system. Nearly all parent/daughter ratios used in radiometric dating can be altered by a number of geological processes - atoms leach, especially Uranium, lead diffuses easily, argon gas moves readily. This results in 'open system' behaviour and would result in incorrect dating results.

I think it is an interesting point of view that God's perfection can't include death and decay.
But I personally think that could be imposing a human view of the definition of perfection onto God.
However with that view I can see how you believe as you do.

Expanding on this. If creation happened in 6 days, then presumably that included carnivores and any non vegetarian creature (including e.g. those that eat insects)? So other creatures would need to die so that those could survive?

Whereas if you view that God created a whole ecosystem in balance then everything to my mind fits.

All animals were created vegetarian, so no death via that route. Carnivory only began after the Flood. In Genesis 1:29-30 "And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so." Thus all animals and humans were vegetarian at that point.

God had created an ecosystem that was perfect, until the Fall. It's possible animal carnivory began at that point, but humans did not eat meat until after the Flood. Genesis 9:6 says: "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything." That was God telling Noah and his sons that it was now OK to eat meat.

If we look ahead to the eternal kingdom, animals are not eating each other. Isaiah said God will create a new heaven and earth and the wold and lamb will feed together and the lion will eat straw like an ox. This shows the reversion to the perfection of His original creation as sin and death have been abolished.

I mean you're welcome to your view, I just don't embrace it.

Thank you @GentleSheep I believe the Bible too.

Justmerach · 21/08/2026 20:34

As mentioned already I believe that God created the world as stated in the Bible. Humans were created from dust the Bible says but we don’t know where this came from. I have said to myself I go with that God created the world and we are his creation and didn’t evolve from another kind. The world he gave us we know from the Bible. However, we don’t know where the dust came from. What are may be your thoughts were the dust came from?

The dust was made by our Creator God.

The Hebrew word used in the Bible for 'dust' is 'aphar' which means fine soil or earth.

Man was made from non-living matter which required God's breath to breathe life into him.

Thank you GentleSheep and Thegreatestoftheseislove for your answer.
I have not seen anyone before state that God created the dust although I do think he did. It seems it can be implied at times we don't know how it got there. It was pleasing to read both of your views.

Some Christians believe that there was a six day creation. The majority in the UK do not. I’m with the majority. If a literal interpretation of scripture deepens your walk with Jesus then that is great. I will continue to preach and teach that Genesis is a myth that narrates deep truths about God. It isn’t a scientific treatise and wasn’t intended to be. Genesis was one of the last books in the OT canon to be written and rewritten even though it appears first in the library of books that is the Bible. There are two creation accounts, one in Genesis 1 and another in Genesis 2 that were thought to be so important that both were preserved. It’s fascinating stuff.
