19 month old daughter - is this just nappy rash?

19 month old daughter has very red skin on the front of her bottom - labia majoria I think it is - outside skin only.
She was itching it a bit in the bath - I did not realise she had it and tried to pursuade her to sit down which she resisted but eventually did and did not seem to distressed - but obviously initially the water irritated it (the water was not too hot I tested it before she got in the bath and again when she wouldnt sit down).

Anyway the skin looks red and irritated almost like someone has taken some very fine sandpaper to that skin which of course they have not but it looks sore.

I put metatanian (nappy healing cream) on it although I was going to put bepanthen on it. She is teething (back teeth) and is dribbling quite a bit although is not too irritable. When I change her nappy at home i always use sudocrem every time and I have asked her nursery to do this and I think they do as she does not suffer from nappy rash as a general course of events.

Is this red skin just nappy rash? The unusual thing is that it is all at the front of her bottom when previously when she has had nappy rash connected with teething it has been at the back around the anus (sorry if too much information).

Any thoughts gratefully received.

It could also be thrush, it looks similar. If the nappy rash cream doesn't work then pop her to the GP.

I hope she's feeling better soon

Keep it dry aswell if you can. Ds had a nasty nappy rash when he was a baby, I found Boots zinc and castor oil cleared it up.

Don't clean her bottom with baby wipes while it's red like this, use damp cotton wool instead.

Even the major brand's (ie,huggies and pampers) so-called sensitive wipes are irritating to sore skin. I know from handling them when I have eczema on my hands so I never use wipes on my dd if she is at all sore.

Plus, bepanthen seems so much gentler on the skin than sudocrem once there is already soreness there, and until it clears.

I'd also say thrush is a definite possibility, especially since she's itching it. My DD suffered with it on and off for a while at that age. Metanium used to work a treat if it was nappy rash - if it didn't clear it up in a day or two, I'd know it was thrush.

You might want to go see the GP if it's not better in a day or two.

Whatever it is, I highly, highly recommend aloe vera gel (got to be high quality stuff from a health food shop - at least £10 a tube but worth its weight in gold). Cleared up DS's nappy rash within hours (that's cause I applied the gel straight away - by the next nappy change, it was gone). So it might take a few days for you. If it's thrush, I believe aloe vera is antifungal, so a great choice. It's also excellent for infections and just about any skin condition you can think of. A worthwhile investment.

Best of luck, whatever you do.
