Temp of 102 since Sunday night in a 9 year old

9 year old DD is generally fit and well but has had a temperature of 102 since Sunday evening. She responds to Nurofen and perks up a bit but when this starts to wear off the temp returns and so does her listlessness.

I rang the doc yesterday to seek advice and he asked me to pop her down - her tonsils are enlarged but not infected, and her throat isn't sore. He just said Nurofen and Calpol (can't do Calpol as it makes her sick) and lots of fluid and to bring her back if doesn't improve.

She woke up at 4am boiling hot all over with a temp again of 102. This is her third day off school now but I can't send her back until temp stabilises.

Any ideas/suggestion please!

I'd be getting her back to the GP if the temperature is not going down.

I think you're right, just don't know what is causing it. She seems quite ok with nurofen, but when it wears off she's back to square one.

Poor wee thing, maybe they will do a blood test? I am no expert but if it isn't shifting they need to find out what is causing it. Good luck hope it gets better soon..

Could be a UTI too. Did they dip test her urine?

sandyballs · 07/07/2010 13:55

Thanks for replies - no blood test done or urine test. I will pop her back tomorrow if no improvement and suggest both I think. She is weeing ok.

temps last 2-3 days before the body gets on top of the virus. Does her urine burn sting, smelly? UTI in this age group unlikely as they can tell you where it hurts but certainly bear it in mind. Blood tests dont show much unless there are specific symptoms (eg with glandular fever) and traumatic for young ones. She prob. has viral infection but if not better after 3 days take her back as sometimes bacterial infections follow on from viral infections and they can be treated with antibiotics.
Keep on with the anti fever stuff, have you tried pain paracetamol rather than calpol - maybe not so sickly. Plus loads of fluids. Good luck

Plain (not pain)

MultipleHeadedFlyingPig · 07/07/2010 15:15

At that age I could have a uti with the only symptom being a fever and a mild malaise. No pain on urinating, no urgency. It's just one to rule out.

My nine year old had a temperature of 102 for 10 days after Easter. We went to the doctor a lot - but it just seemed to be a really nasty bug. She had antibiotics in the end. Subsequently my other two got it, and were ill for a week.
